The Buffalo Bills have selected Oregon linebacker Kristian `Kiko' Alonso with the 46th pick in the NFL draft. Listed at 6-foot-3, 238 pounds, Alonso was a hard-hitting tackler over a three-year career. He played mostly at inside linebacker and finished with 143 tackles, six interceptions and 3 1/2 sacks in 36 games, including 17 starts. Alonso had one interception and five tackles in being named the 2012 Rose Bowl defensive player of the game in a 45-38 win over Wisconsin. He encountered off-the-field problems, and was suspended for the entire 2010 season due to separate alcohol-related offenses. The Bills had concentrated on offense with their first two picks of the draft. They selected Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel 16th, and Southern California receiver Robert Woods with the 41st pick.

Jim Kelly hopes E.J. Manuel can deliver for the Bills

Former Bills great Jim Kelly believes E.J. Manuel gives the city of Buffalo as well as the Bills some hope for the future. “I think I’m as hopeful as every fan in Buffalo,” Kelly said, per the Buffalo News. “I live here. This is my home now. I said it earlier: You get tired of people always referring back to when I played. I don’t want to do that. I want to refer somebody...

Rookie QB Manuel has ties to Bills famed past

Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel is already well-connected to the franchise's Hall-of-Fame past. Bruce Smith, the NFL's career sack leader, is his godfather. Former star quarterback Jim Kelly is ready to take Manuel under his wing. On Friday, Manuel began looking ahead to the future, a day after being the only quarterback selected in the first round of the NFL...

With members of the Buffalo Bills hierarchy expecting the rookie to compete in 2013, E.J. Manuel may get maimed in Orchard Park this autumn

Sounding ******* crazy, members of the Buffalo Bills hierarchy expect raw rookie E.J. Manuel to compete with Kevin Kolb to become the team’s starting quarterback in 2013. The 23-year-old Manuel, drafted by Buffalo 16th overall out of Florida State on Thursday, is brimming with potential. However, the 2013 Senior Bowl MVP and 2012 second team All-ACC selection is nowhere near ready...

Bills' drafting E.J. Manuel lacked sound strategy

Since being promoted to the position of general manager, Buddy Nix's teams have gone 4-12, 6-10 and finally, 6-10. That's a crappy record that no general manager can actually defend. Why does he still have a job in the NFL? The worst part is 6-10 seems to be the high water mark for the Bills again this year. Yesterday I wrote that the Browns had essentially given up on...

A Q&A about EJ Manuel with an FSU Writer

I'll make it short. The Bills drafted EJ Manuel and I don't feel like going on YouTube to see his greatest hits and misses because I'm at work. Instead, I got a Q&A  about him from the boys from Unconquered Noles, the FSU blog for Bloguin. Enjoy. 1) What are his pros and weaknesses? EJ has the physical tools and work ethic to be successful. He's good...

Bills move back to get their guy; select Manuel 16th overall

Buddy Nix wanted a QB. The fans wanted a QB and all the experts pointed towards a QB. When the dust settled on the first round, the Bills had come away with the man they think is the answer at quarterback. EJ Manuel. After swinging an effective trade to slide back eight spots, Buffalo selected Manuel out of Florida State making him the first quarterback ever selected with...

EJ Manuel accidentally got phone call meant for No. 3 pick Dion Jordan

Former Florida State star EJ Manuel made out better than many people expected in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday. The Buffalo Bills selected him with the 16th overall pick, and he ended up being the only quarterback taken in the first 32 selections. However, there was a brief moment when Manuel thought the night was going to turn out even better. Just before the Miami...

Geno Smith not returning for Round 2

The NFL Draft came and went with several significant surprises, perhaps none more shocking than the Buffalo Bills taking quarterback EJ Manuel in the middle of the first round. What makes the selection even more surprising is that former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith was available at the time. Smith fell past the Bills and every other team in the first round, and the top prospect...

Day Two Bills Predictions

The Buffalo Bills made a bold and surprising move on Thursday night when they selected quarterback EJ Manuel instead of Geno Smith or Ryan Nassib with the 16th overall pick. It caught a lot of flack from the so-called “draft experts” for being a pick that could have waited. While that may be the case, the Bills had a mission and idea in mind, and they did what they had to do...

Mike Florio Says Geno Smith Is A Big Baby For Not Attending Day Two Of The Draft

Though more than a few analysts had predicted he would be Top 10 pick, Geno Smith sat around all night on Thursday without being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. In fact, the only quarterback selected was the Bills’ surprising choice of E.J. Manuel with the 16th pick. Rather than hang around on the second day to see which team swoops him up (presumably) in the 2nd...

USC WR Woods drafted by Bills at No. 41

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- The Buffalo Bills have selected Southern California junior receiver Robert Woods with the 41st pick in the NFL draft. Woods joins first-round selection Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel in what's becoming a revamped offense under rookie head coach Doug Marrone. Listed at 6-feet and 190 pounds, Woods was a three-year starter who had a school record...

Linemen & trades highlight surprising first round

There is one thing that is always unpredictable when it comes to trying to forecast the NFL draft. Team needs are easily identified and news leaks of players going to a particular team, but one thing you can rarely see coming is a trade. The when, who and where in the draft almost always blow up mock drafts. Mine was no different. But even with the surprises, my mock got five players...

Geno Smith reportedly changed his mind, will attend Day 2 of NFL Draft

No player was more disappointed after round one of the NFL Draft on Thursday night than former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. After a great deal of speculation that he could be the first quarterback taken, Smith sat at Radio City Music Hall and watched 32 players embark on a new life without hearing his name called. Instead, the Buffalo Bills took EJ Manuel with the 16th overall...
