NFL Injury Report:
Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel was in a heated
competition to be the team’s starter Week 1 with veteran signal caller Kevin Kolb. Entering the weekend, it was up in the air who would be under center to
open the regular season. However, The Bills announced yesterday that Manuel
will undergo “minor” knee surgery, which will sideline him for the remainder of
Head coach Doug Marrone told reporters – including Mike Wilkening of Pro Football Talk – that Manuel was experiencing swelling in his
left knee, prompting an MRI. The scan indicated that the rookie requires a “minor
knee procedure,” which will keep him out until the start of the regular season.
“EJ Manuel had some swelling in his left knee this morning
and was examined by our medical staff,” Marrone said in a statement from the
club. “An MRI revealed that he will need to have a minor knee procedure and
that has been scheduled. He will miss the remainder of the preseason and then
be re-evaluated at that time.”
While it’s not a sure thing that Kolb now opens the season
as the Bills’ starter, it would certainly seem to give him a leg up in the
competition considering Manuel won’t be around for the final two preseason
games. However, even if Kolb begins the season under center, this could only
represent a short-term setback for Manuel.
