Oh how the pendulum can swing. When the Buffalo Bills drafted Clemson running back C.J. Spiller in the first round of the 2010 Draft, fans complained. The Bills then had Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. Why would they take another running back when they needed help in several other areas? It’s now safe to say, Bills fans owe C.J. Spiller an apology.

In the first two years of Spiller’s career in Buffalo, I heard the word “bust” thrown around by Bills fans almost more than I could stomach. In the back of my mind I was saying: “look, I know you guys have a weird loyalty to Jackson, but Spiller is the gamebreaker the offense needs.” Those words are now ringing true early this season.

In Sunday’s 24-14 win over the Browns, a scary moment occurred when Spiller left the game in the first half with a shoulder injury. The news is good, however, as he is not expected to miss more than a week. The whole “Bills Mafia” is now breathing a sigh of relief, as the man they used to call a bust is now the savior of the offense.

Through three weeks, including his limited playing time against Cleveland, C.J. Spiller has 308 rushing yards for an unbelievable 9.3 yards per carry, seven receptions for 114 yards, and four total touchdowns. He is putting up Pro-Bowl numbers for an offense that previously lacked an identity. Coupled with Fred Jackson, the Bills rushing attack has the potential to be the best in the league.

I am personally happy for Spiller, because I heard way too many people calling him a bust without him even seeing ample playing time. I heard way too many people saying Fred Jackson is better. I am not knocking Jackson by any means, as he was the league’s leading rusher last season before he was injured. But, there should be little to no doubt right now as to who the man is in Buffalo. C.J. Spiller is proving that he can be an every down back, isn’t scared to run between the tackles, and is also dangerous out of the backfield as a receiver.

So swallow your pride, Bills Mafia. Don’t claim that you always believed Spiller would pan out, we know that’s not the case. Give the man an apology and be happy you have a stud of his caliber, because he can change a game by himself. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a perennial superstar in the snowy confines of Western New York. For a team on the verge like the Bills, who are expected to make a run at a playoff appearance, what initially appeared to be a questionable draft pick has evolved into a gold mine.

The only question left is if Spiller can stay healthy and produce all season. I’m banking on Spiller answering that with a resounding yes.
