Monday morning Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone announced that the team would sign quarterback Thad Lewis off the practice squad. In Week 5 of the season, quarterback EJ Manuel suffered an injury where he sprained his LCL against the Cleveland Browns.  Manuel’s injury will cost him “six weeks or so” as reported by NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. During the Bills game against the Browns, Jeff Tuel was put in to take on Manuel’s role.  His performance was poor and non impressive.  He completed 8 of 20 passes for 80 yards and an  interception. The Bills chose not to start the rookie after his performance last week and decided to sign Lewis to the active roster. The team was working out both Pat White and Dennis Dixon, so the signing of Lewis came as a surprise.  The Bills were also looking at Josh Freeman who was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but instead, signed with the Minnesota Vikings late Sunday night. Lewis has spent the last six weeks with the Bills and is familiar with the teams style in their offensive line.  He was traded to Buffalo in August from the Detriot Lions after Manuel was sidelined with a knee injuryand Kevin Kolb sustained a season ending concussion. Lewis has played in one game when he was with the Browns in 2012 where he completed 22 of 32 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown and interception when the team played against the Pittsburgh Steelers. “Thad gives us the best chance.”  Coach Marrone said.  “We’re going to give him an opportunity to see what he has.” Lewis is expected to start Week six when the Bills host the Cincinnati Bengals.
