Some surprising news out of One Bills Drive today as the team will release veteran linebacker Nick Barnett. The news hasn’t been officially announced by the organization, but Barnett has tweeted that he was informed today of the decision to release him. I was told I’ll be released today by the Buffalo Bills. Thanks to all the great Fans and friends I have met in Western New York.. It was — NickBarnett (@NickBarnett) February 11, 2013 In two seasons with the Bills, Barnett led the team in tackles twice — 130 in 2011; 112 in 2012 — and was a true leader on the defensive side of the ball. And while the move surprises many, it’s not that far fetched to understand why they did it. Barnett is going to be 32 years old come May, and was set to make $3.5-million this season, the final year of a 3-year deal signed in 2011. The extra money will allow the Bills to once again become players in the free agent market where they are likely to try and add depth to the wide receiver and linebacker positions. It also frees up some room for the team to sign Andy Levitre and Jairus Byrd, both of whom are set to become unrestricted free agents in March, to long term deals. Queen City Sports will have more as the story develops. The post BREAKING: Bills To Release Nick Barnett appeared first on Queen City Sports.
