ESPN's Chris Mortenson is reporting today, August 10, 2012. Green Bay will sign running back Cedric Benson.

The signing indicates Green Bay is not confident James Starks can handle the workload by himself or in his inexperienced back-ups Brandon Sain and Alex Green.

It may be as much be a reaction to San Diego running back Ryan Matthews injury, versus Green Bay yesterday, as it is a lack of confidence. The Packers wanting to get a veteran back before there are none left.

The signing is a little baffling considering Packer veteran Ryan Grant is still available to sign.

Grant averaged 4.2 yards per carry a season ago in an almost equal time share with Starks.

Comparatively, Benson averaged 3.9 and 3.5 for Cincinnati in 2011 and 2012.

Grant has less wear and tear on his body than Benson and has only averaged under 4.0 in one season, 2008, when he averaged 3.9 yards per carry.

Perhaps Green Bay sees Benson as a better inside runner than Grant? But with John Kuhn I see little appeal in that.

Perhaps Green Bay knows something about Grant's health no one else knows?

Perhaps Green Bay has seen Grant lose a step in the last two years?

He looked pretty strong in the last four games of 2011 to me.

Sain or Green will be the change of pace back no matter who splits the every down carries.

With Grant still available, this signing makes no sense from the outside looking in.
