Yes, I am a classless douche
So you may not have heard yet, but Wisconsin beat Indiana last week 83-20. No, not in women’s basketball. In football. In what has traditionally been a relatively classy program, Wisconsin chose to run up the score last week on the Hoosiers in a style that was uncharacteristically douchey. These are not the days of Barry Alvarez. We are now witnessing the “I am super hardcore” win-at-all-costs Bret Bielema Badger football program.
Coach Bret Bielema
Wisconsin’s head coach Brett Bielema is at fault. Pure and simple. Coach Bielema can talk about playing his fourth string center and back-up QB at the end of the Indiana game, but it still doesn’t explain a 63 point margin of victory. To score 83 points in a single football game, you have to be pretty aggressive in doing so. Even against a really bad team. I’m not sure that a Peyton Manning run college offense could hang 83 points on anyone without trying pretty hard to do so in the second half. Hey Bielema, what about running the ball once you get up by five or six touchdowns?
A Track Record of Douchey Behavior
Against Minnesota this year, Wisconsin had just scored a touchdown to take a 41-16 lead in the fourth quarter. There were seven minutes left and obviously the game was out of hand. Brett Bielema chose to go for the two point conversion. Are you kidding? What does the two point conversion accomplish in that situation? The only thing that going for two against a crappy Minnesota team in the fourth quarter proves is that Brett Bielema is a classless meat head.
Coach Bielema is running up scores to improve Wisconsin’s BCS rankings. Here is an idea for Wisconsin: how about you guys win out one of these seasons? If you want to go to a BCS bowl, why don’t you win the Big Ten? Stop running up the score on crappy teams and start winning conference championships. This seems like a fairly elegant solution. Wisconsin hasn’t won a Big Ten Championship since 1999. They might try improving their win loss record against good teams.
Saturday in Ann Arbor
I would absolutely love to see Wisconsin receive a small amount of karmic retribution with a loss to Michigan this Saturday. In fact, most of the country would love to see Wisconsin get a little pay back for their ridiculous anti-sportsmanship antics this season. I’m not sure that it is something that the Wolverines can deliver.
Unfortunately, Wisconsin remains a solidly talented team. Michigan’s defense is not likely to hold the Badgers to a reasonable number of points. The only hope is that Wisconsin is in let down mode this week following their extreme margin of victory. If Michigan can play mistake free football, they have a chance to win. That’s pretty much all I can say after watching Greg Robinson’s D so far this year. Perhaps the football Gods can do their part for Michigan this week given the antics of the Big Ten’s most classy coach, Wisconsin’s Brett Bielema.
