Dawson on the phone with Joe Banner This past week saw the departure of another beloved special teams player. Last week it was Josh Cribbs, this week its Phil Dawson. The local rags/sports talk are up in arms because not only one, but two of the undoubtedly stand up guys are as of this week are no longer calling themselves Cleveland Browns. Josh Cribbs was gone, he knew it and we knew it. By the end of the year it was obvious to anyone watching the Browns that Cribbs was a step slow (maybe knee issues?), and with the rule change relating to kickoffs, was no longer the impact player he was earlier in his career. Like Desmond Howard, and Devin Hester before him, Cribbs' time as the best returner in the NFL are over. Good move by the Browns is what most people would say. Phil Dawson on the other hand is an entirely different scenario. Where players usually decline with age, he only seems to be getting better and kicking farther. He consistently gets touchbacks, 30 in 2012,...

Dawson Says All Focus on 49ers

March 21, 2013By Fred GreethamOBR Senior Reporter Phil Dawson might someday leave his heart in San Francisco, but for now it has been left in Cleveland. For the past 14 years Dawson toiled on the shores of Lake Erie kicking in inclement weather and swirling winds. Harbaugh worried about Kap's muscles

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed concern over quarterback Colin Kaepernick hitting the weight room hard this offseason.

What the Browns should have said about Phil Dawson

As I sometimes like to do, I like to help the Browns communicate with the fans. Sometimes I get chided for caring so much about what the Browns say because all that really matters to a lot of you is “what they do.” Usually that means all they have to do is win more football games. While that may be kind of true, I am of the belief that winning on the field and perfection in fan...

Anquan Boldin is ready to create chemistry with Colin Kaepernick: ‘that’s something that doesn't just happen overnight’

Colin Kaepernick in 2012 only had one viable wideout in Michael Crabtree; however, with the addition of Anquan Boldin, he now has a pair. Gone is the soft play of Randy Moss, soft routes and weak over the middle. Boldin is the exact opposite, a tough as nails receiver who just gets it done. He isn’t the highest jumper, the fastest runner, but he is one of the toughest pass...

NFL News: Browns give tryout to “Kickalicious,” Harvard Rugland

Tucked inside an updated version of Mary Kay Cabot’s column regarding Phil Dawson (as discussed here on Thursday), is a line item regarding the Cleveland Browns trying out a kicker named Havard Rugland. Rugland, 28, is a Norwegian known to many as “Kickalicious,” a trick-kick — the football equal of the basketball trick shot — artist who became an Internet sensation when...

Jim Harbaugh Concerned Kaepernick is getting Too Muscular

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has apparently put the team’s Super Bowl loss behind him and has made preparing for the 2013 NFL season his main priority. Whether it is throwing or working out, Kaepernick is all in according to head coach Jim Harbaugh. But Harbaugh does have some concerns about Kaepernick, Specifically, how much weight lifting his young signal...

2013 NFL Mock Draft: San Francisco 49ers Pre-Draft Strategy

Season SummaryThe 49ers had a tremendous 2012-13 season, riding a great second half from QB Colin Kaepernick all the way to an NFC title. After making the switch to Kaepernick from Alex Smith midway through the season, the 49ers offense really took off with the addition of a big play threat. San Francisco’s defense also excelled, ranking fourth in the league in both rushing and...

New Kicker for 49ers: Out With the Old and in With the--Old

Kicking was an issue for the San Francisco 49ers last season; surprising considering that they had one of the best in the game, David Akers, on the roster. Every player--kickers including--eventually have a fall from grace. Maybe last season was it for Akers. Anyway...rather than go with an untested rookie or nobody the team ended up tabbing another older veteran to take over...
