BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- Browns coach Pat Shurmur is "very optimistic" rookie running back Trent Richardson will play in the season opener on Sept. 9 against Philadelphia. The No. 3 overall pick in April's NFL draft, Richardson has been sidelined since undergoing left knee surgery on Aug. 9. The former Alabama star has yet to play in any of Cleveland's exhibition games. Shurmur said before Sunday's practice that Richardson has made "great progress" and expects him to be back on the field "soon." Shurmur wouldn't say what "soon" meant. Richardson has had two microscopic procedures on his knee since playing in the BCS title game in January. The Browns lost to the Eagles 27-10 on Friday in their home exhibition opener. Cleveland will play Chicago at home on Thursday in its final preseason game.

Video: Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden in Madden 13 Ratings Debate

Though they’re not exactly heavily featured, Cleveland Browns rookies Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden make cameos in the SB Nation video featuring the incoming NFL rookie class as they discuss, ever so modestly, what their ratings should be in the upcoming release of Madden 13. For what it’s worth, Richardson will enter the season with an overall Madden 13 rating of 83 much...

Browns News: Trent Richardson Still Not At Practice; Weeden to Sit Out Game

The twitter brigade in Berea kept us informed today that rookie RB Trent Richardson was not on the practice field again, and that QB Brandon Weeden isn’t expected to play at all on Thursday. Still no Trent Richardson for #Browns. Expected him on field by this point this week. I’m sure we’ll get the usual “he’s making progress.” — Tom Withers (@twithersAP) August 28...

Weeden sitting is the safe play, I guess

Pat Shurmur announced today that Brandon Weeden was going to sit out the fourth pre-season game this week. It has created debate all over sports talk radio and twitter as people try to figure out what their stance is on the topic. On the one hand, Brandon Weeden and the starting offense might want to have something in their memories that’s a bit more positive than what they did...

Montario Hardesty Struggles vs. Eagles

Browns running back Montario Hardesty started in place of Trent Richardson (knee) again this week, but didn't look good at all and may have lost his spot as the No. 2 guy. He rushed for 12 yards on eight carries vs. Philadelphia, and more importantly, fumbled for the second week in a row.Fantasy Spin:At this point we are not sure whether Hardesty or Brandon Jackson is the correct...

Browns Preseason Game 3: Halftime Report

In Pat Shurmur’s halftime interview he summed it up. “We didn’t do much right.” The Browns go to the half down 17-3. And it wasn’t really that close. The Browns took the opening kick-off and moved down the field, before penalties and a Brandon Weeden fumble gave the ball to the Eagles. Weeden played all but the final minute of the first half, and finished 9 of 20 for 117...

Browns may end up keeping Colt McCoy

Getty It’s starting to sound like Browns head coach Pat Shurmur might be leaning towards keeping quarterback Colt McCoy around as Brandon Weeden’s back up this season. “I think he’s done an outstanding job here in training camp,” said Shurmur. “I’m very pleased with where he’s at. I gained an even greater appreciation of him, the way he’s competed, the way he...

Shurmur says Hardesty was not demoted

There was some speculation that Cleveland Browns running back Montario Hardesty was demoted after not taking part in practice yesterday. He’s fumbled in both of the last two games and some thought head coach Pat Shurmur was sending him a message by not letting him practice. Well Shurmur put all of that to rest today. “No, not at all,” said Shurmur. “He’s just sore from...

Browns QB Weeden to sit out Bears game

Shurmur said quarterbacks Seneca Wallace and Thad Lewis will also play against...

While We’re Waiting: Browns vs. Eagles Recaps Galore

Naturally, it was all a smokescreen. Right? “Of interest mainly to fans who endure paying full price for half value, the Browns’ exhibition home opener Friday against Philadelphia was one in which neither team wanted to show much. That was to avoid tipping off their wilier designs before the regular-season opener between the teams in 16 days. The Browns’ starters, if nothing...
