Browns defensive tackle Phil Taylor suffered a torn pectoral on May 10. Today, he came out and said he is taking his time and rehabbing the right way. He remains optimistic that he will return for the 2012 season. Taylor told the Akron Beacon-Journal “When I know it’s time for me to be out there, I’ll get out there.”
Taylor was the Browns first round pick in the 2011 draft and played in all 16 games last year. In 2011, he had four sacks and a forced fumble. The injury happened while Taylor was bench pressing, and he said he didn’t realize when he did it that he had seriously hurt himself. “I really didn’t know what happened because it actually didn’t hurt that much,” Taylor said. “I mean I thought I had just strained it. But after the MRI, obviously it wasn’t just a strain.”
Injuries similar to the one suffered by Phil Taylor can take four to six months to heal which means he could be back by week six. During mandatory minicamp, third-year defensive lineman Scott Paxson has taken the reps in Taylor’s spot. Browns coach Pat Shurmur said rookies John Hughes (third round) and Billy Winn (sixth round) are competing for that starting spot.
