Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik announced today that the team will not use a franchise or transition tag on any player, including defensive end Michael Bennett. Instead, they appear to be giving the starting spot to Da’Quan Bowers.  “Da’Quan is a guy I thought continued to accelerate his play throughout the end of the season,” Dominik said via the Tampa Bay Times. “The more we can get him on the football field, I think the better we are as a football team.” That’s a bit surprising. Bowers awaits his April court date after being charged with second degree criminal possession of a weapon in New York earlier this week. With the uncertainty of Bowers’ future, one would have to wonder if the Buccaneers know a bit more. Several reports quoted the attorney for Da’Quan Bowers saying his client would be exonerated after the charges are investigated fairly. Of course you can’t expect him to say Bowers was charged correctly but perhaps the team knows more to go all in with Bowers at left defensive end and allow Michael Bennett to test free agency. Bennett would have made an estimated $11 million in 2013 with the franchise tag. He lead the team in 2012 with nine sacks. Players within that salary range averaged 11 sacks. Many quickly assumed it was imperative the team made certain Bennett was retained due to the situation with Bowers. Boy were there a lot of people wrong on that one. Could the Bucs have a bigger plan for free agency? Or are they hoping to re-sign Bennett at a lower price? whatever it may be, Bowers was drafted in 2011 to one day become a full time starter. Can’t have him in a second string role forever. The post Buccaneers going all in with Da’Quan Bowers appeared first on The Bay Cave.
