The Tampa Bay Buccaneers played a much more physically impressive football game against the New England Patriots. While they did win the game, they may have suffered an even bigger loss when Davin Joseph suffered a serious injury just before the half.

Michael Smith would once again have a good night on kickoff returns as he starts the game with a 39-yard return. On the opening drive of the game, the Bucs would capitalize on a 15-yard face mask penalty called on the Patriots. Josh Freeman and Vincent Jackson would get going early and often as they connect 3 times for 49 yards. The drive would be capped off by a Doug Martin touchdown from inside the two yard line. Martin ended the night with 13 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown.

After starting the game hot at 5/6, quarterback Josh Freeman would go 5/13 once Mike WIlliams and Vincent Jackson were no longer in the game. During those 13 attempts, Freeman had some overthrown passes, miscues with receivers, and forced some throws due to pressure from defenders in his face. He finished 10/19 for 102 yards on the night.

The Bucs defense would give problems to Tom Brady and the Patriots’ offensive line. Brady faced a tremendous amount of pressure from the Buccaneers’ front seven from some well run stunts and disguised blitzes. Brady was sacked twice including a hard hit from Bucs’ defensive end Michael Bennett to force a fumble.

Rookie safety Mark Barron saw lots of action. He returned an interception for a touchdown after a pass from Tom Brady that was intended for tight end Rob Gronkowski was tipped in the air by Ronde Barber.

Gerald McCoy and Adrian Clayborn would have some injury scares but both would be fine. However, that would not be the case for Pro Bowl guard Davin Joseph. Joseph would be carted off the field just before the end of the first half after a Patriots defender would land on the back of his leg, causing him to roll backwards.

The Bucs will evaluate Joseph on Saturday but Schiano would say that his injury “doesn’t look good” and that he was “worried.” Initial speculation is that he may be lost for the season.

The Buccaneers will finish the preseason Wednesday evening in Washington when the face the Redskins.

First roster cut downs will be August 28th when teams need to go from 90 players down to 80 then down to 53 by August 31st.
