Despite taking Ezekiel Ansah fifth overall, the Detroit Lions tried to trade down with Buffalo to take him at #8 (Credit: AP Photo) In April, the Detroit Lions selected Brigham Young’s Ezekiel Ansah with the fifth overall pick. According to Buffalo Bills general manager, Buddy Nix, the Lions were looking to move down from the number five position. Despite the Lions having Ansah as their third overall on their draft board, Detroit hoped Buffalo wanted to move up to five to select EJ Manuel. Nix said the price to move up would have been to high and the team felt comfortable they could get their guy later. “You’ve got to give up too much to move up. We had guys that we thought would be there and had our favorite there so we weren’t interested in moving up,” Nix said. Instead, the Buffalo Bills moved from eight to sixteen and took EJ Manuel there. Buddy Nix’s decision to stay at eight ended up being a smart move as the team added a second round and seventh round pick for moving down eight spots.
