Former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has joined the Buffalo Bills as their new defensive coordinator. The Bills made the move official on Monday with a press conference announcing the hiring. “When you’re a head coach, and you find yourself on the outside, you want to be very careful about your next opportunity, and I was in this case,” Schwartz said. “And I didn’t step into this lightly. Not only from the administration here, the ownership and the coaching staff, but also from a player standpoint, this is a tremendous opportunity for a defensive coach.” -via the Detroit News Schwartz replaces Mike Pettine as the Bills defensive coordinator. Last week the Cleveland Browns named Pettine as their new head coach. It was just one month to a day that Schwartz was named the new Bills defensive coordinator from when he was fired as the Detroit Lions head coach. In five seasons as the Lions head coach Schwartz went 29-51 and never could get the Lions secondary to become anything more than abysmal. Last season the Lions were 27th ranked in the NFL against the pass. After five seasons on the job his defense was 27th ranked against the pass and this gets you hired as a defense coordinator in the NFL? Yes, he did inherit an 0-16 team but that was five full NFL seasons ago. Now he becomes the Bills defensive coordinator and is charged with turning around a defense that yielded and average of 24.3 points per game.
