While the Buffalo Bills loss to the New York Jets was as painful as  any loss in the NFL, Marcell Dareus has experienced a different, much more painful loss this week.

Simeon Gilmore, the younger brother of Dareus, was shot and killed during a triple homicide in Alabama. Dareus traveled back home to be with family as they mourn Gimore's sudden, tragic death.

The Bills organization has done everything possible to support Dareus during this trying time.

“I spoke to Marcell and all of our condolences do go out to him and the family,” Chan Gailey told “He’s got a lot on his plate to say the least. I talked to him this morning. I think he’ll be back for Sunday’s game whether it’s tonight, tomorrow or the next day, but I think he’ll be here for this week. He wants to be back.”

Dareus has experienced a rash of deaths to close family members throughout his life. His father died when he was six, his grandmother passed when he was 13 and his mother perished when he was 20. He now mourns the loss of his brother.

Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick says the loss for Dareus is a loss for the team, as they are a family.

“We view each other as family being around each other so much,” Fitzpatrick told “So it’s a tough thing to have him going through that right now. All we can do is offer our support to him and his family and it’s obviously a situation nobody wants to get caught up in.”

Despite the tragedy, Gailey says he expects Dareus to play on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs for Buffalo's home opener.
