The Buffalo Bills used a seventh round draft pick on kicker John Potter out of Western Michigan in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Following the draft, the front office brought in Shawn Powell, a strong legged punter from Florida State as an undrafted free agent. Both are hoping to earn starting roles nods over the veterans Rian Lindell and Brian Moorman.
Moorman is 36-years old and a two time Pro Bowler and was once considered one of the best punters in the league, but if Powell can quickly improve through training camp, the Bills’ special teams could look a lot different.
Powell could give Moorman a run for his money, considering the consensus All-American punter averaged 47 yards per punt last year, with a 41.2 net yardage, which was good for second in the nation. 21 of his punts landed inside the 20 yard line, and 63% weren’t returned.
