The hiring of Marvin Lewis marked the end of the Lost Decade. In the wake of an extended period of football futility, most of Lewis’ tenure as head coach has been spent trying to steady a team that has lurched and backfired and stalled like a stick-shift AMC Pacer with a 16-year-old behind the wheel. In Lewis’ first two seasons, he lifted a team that had gone 55-137 in their 12 years under Mike Brown’s ownership and got them to repeat 8-8 records. Then in 2005, a high-flying offense and an opportunistic defense surged to become division champions for the first time since the demise of the AFC Central. And Bengals fans rejoiced. But the following years exposed the team’s weaknesses. They had plenty of talent but lacked the fortitude to overcome in the face of adversity. Playing a division winner’s schedule was more than they could handle in 2006, and a collapse at the end of the season dashed more than just playoff hopes. Fan discontent and disillusion began to settle in again. In 20...

Cincinnati Bengals Won’t Rest Starters vs. Baltimore Ravens

At this time of year, questions always arise about whether teams already qualified for the playoffs with nothing to gain, should rest starters or not. An argument can be made for each side, players become rusty or why risk injury? This week, the Cincinnati Bengals face off against the Baltimore Ravens with theoretically nothing to gain with a win. The Bengals are locked in the playoffs...

A 10th Win Is Huge

The Bengals are locked in to the 6th seed of the playoffs no matter whether they win or lose against the Ravens. So it is natural to wonder whether Marvin might choose to sit rest some of his normal starters in the season finale. Of course, Marvin was asked about it. He gave what I say is the right answer: No. It’s not the right answer because the front office is still hoping to...

Media, Please Shut Up About The NFC East

I watched the NFL Network re-air the Bengals deliver the knock-out blow to the Steelers Wednesday night. The game was just as fun the second time, but far less stressful. During a commercial break, I saw NFLN’s blurb covering the QBs named to the Pro Bowl. (Because, you know, we fans care only about quarterbacks, right?) Honest to God, this is no joke. Whoever wrote the script...

Bengals claim Sanzenbacher, put Kirkpatrick on IR

Wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher is heading home. The Maumee, Ohio, native and Ohio State alumnus was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday. Sanzenbacher was waived by the Chicago Bears a day earlier. The Bengals cleared a roster spot for Sanzenbacher by placing rookie cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick on injured reserve because of a knee injury. In four games with...

The Cincinnati Bengals announced on Tuesday (Christmas of all days) that they've placed Dre Kirkpatrick on Injured Reserve, citing a knee injury that he suffered well before training camp. Apparently the knee hasn't really worked itself out, despite actually suffering a concussion earlier this month. Kirkpatrick, the team's first first-round selection during the 2012...

Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis Sits During Practice With Illness

Bengals running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who prior to being stoned by the Pittsburgh Steelers for a season-low 14 yards rushing, was setting an impressive pace of 100-yard games that nearly reset franchise records, sat during Thursday's practice with an illness. There's no reason for Green-Ellis not to go, but if the team decides to rest their starting running back...

Bengals Plan To Play Starters Against Ravens On Sunday

Fresh off of a playoff berth via a win versus the Steelers, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis doesn't plan to ease up off of the gas pedal. With the Bengals solidifying a Wild Card spot on Sunday and the Ravens claiming the division with their respective win against the Giants, the question is looming over Marvin Lewis on what he'll do next week when the two teams meet in...

Baltimore Ravens at Cincinnati Bengals: Three Bold Predictions

With the Baltimore Ravens taking on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17 of the regular season this game could have had more ramifications than it currently does. As it sits now, the Ravens, after their win over the Giants on Sunday, have clinched the AFC North and are currently in the fourth seed for the playoffs. The Bengals, after their last second thriller in Pittsburgh, now own...

Ravens-Bengals Preview

The Cincinnati Bengals didn't look like a team that would contend for a postseason spot while being routed by the Baltimore Ravens in the season opener, but both these clubs are playoff-bound following their regular-season finale Sunday in Cincinnati. Neither is paying much attention to the seemingly countless scenarios that will determine its opponent - including one that would...
