DAVIE, Fla. On his last visit to Buffalo, Reggie Bush capped the best day of his NFL career by sliding through the end zone following a fourth-quarter 76-yard touchdown run. Now, hes doing a nosedive. After a phenomenal end to last season and an impressive start to this one, the Dolphins running back lately has been paranormal. At least Bush knows it. I have to apologize to Dolphin Nation my performance these past few weeks has been poor & I'm embarrassed right now! You guys deserve better, Bush tweeted earlier this week to his 2.68 million followers. Seems like Thursday night at Buffalo would be a good time to make up for his recent crummy showings. Its the biggest game of the season for the Dolphins (4-5) and Bush showed what he could do last December against the Bills. In a 30-23 victory at Ralph Wilson Stadium, Bush rushed for a career-high 203 yards. That was the third game of a four-game finishing stretch in which he had 519 yards. Then Bush started this season with 302 yards his first 2 games, including 172 in Week 2 against Oakland, when he was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week. But after being knocked out of the next weeks game late in the first half against the New York Jets with a knee injury, Bush hasnt been the same guy. In his past six games, Bush has rushed 76 times for 253 yards for a meager 3.3 average. The knee supposedly is fine but something else sure is wrong. After Bush lost a fumble late in the first quarter in last Sundays 37-3 home loss to Tennessee, he was benched for the next six series. After he returned, he didnt get another carry, finishing the day with four for 21 yards. Bush said it the first time in his life hed been benched. Obviously, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin factored in Bushs recent poor play, including having previously lost two fumbles this season. I just felt like I havent been playing as well as I know I can these past few weeks, Bush said when asked about his apology to fans on Twitter. Its been a little up and down and it hasnt really been where I would like it to be. Im my biggest critic of myself and I always set the highest goals and highest standards for myself, so I havent been playing to where I know Im capable of. If Bush wants to get it going again, theres no better place than at Buffalo. The Bills are last in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game. If Bush cant run on them, he cant run on anybody anymore. How big the game is for the Dolphins cant be understated. Theyre two games behind New England (6-3) in the AFC East and two games in back of Indianapolis (6-3) and Pittsburgh (6-3) in the wild-card race. Plus, theyve already lost to the Colts, meaning they wouldnt win a tiebreaker with them. A loss Thursday and the playoff hopes are all but done for the Dolphins. With two games looming against New England and one at San Francisco, they likely would finish with a losing record, which is what just about everybody predicted. A win, though, and Miami might make things interesting for at least a few more weeks. And Thursdays game against the Bills (3-6), who have lost five of six, is certainly winnable. I think were all a little happy to have this game on Thursday because it gives us a chance to kind of erase this last game and get back to a football game very quickly, Bush said. You just get to hurry up and kind of erase that last loss, erase that sting a little bit. Plenty of Miami players are trying to make up for the debacle against Tennessee. Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill, after throwing 107 straight passes without an interception, tossed three. The normally steady defense gave up the most points the Dolphins have allowed since last seasons opener. But for Bush, the slump has been a lot longer than just one week. Its time for him to turn it around, and what better place to do it than where last season he was making like a guy stealing home.
