With this week’s news that Mike Martz had interviewed for the Raiders offensive coordinator job I wanted to get some data on how Martz had done as a play-caller.  In gathering this data, I became interested in other candidates as well, so I gathered information on some of the other possible candidates and then, for comparison, I threw in data from the Raiders last two offensive coordinators, Greg Knapp and Hue Jackson, at the bottom.  Norv Turner is also included despite likely going to Cleveland to be their next OC.   The list below is the coach, year he called plays for the team and his title. For the purposes of this list I only included years in which they called plays (for example, Al Saunders was Hue Jackson’s OC in 2011 but it didn’t count for him because he didn’t call the plays).   The two numbers after the year are both based on what I consider the most important stat, points per game.  I dislike using the “total offense” stat because that is yards per game and there are some offenses that are very good at scoring and some that can generate a lot of yards but struggle to get into the end zone.  Obviously, the point of the offense is to score the most points, so I went with what I consider the most important stat.   Take a look through the information below. This is just data, it doesn’t take into account the talent of the players or any other additional considerations which obviously make a difference.  With this information, who would you want as the Raiders next OC? After the year, the first number is where the offense ranked, based on points scored and the second number is the average points per game that year.   Mike Martz Rams 1999 – 1st, 32.9 2000 – 1st, 33.8 2001 – 1st, 31.4 2002 – 23rd, 19.8 2003 – T2nd, 27.9 2004 – 19th, 19.9 2005 – 11th, 22.7 Lions 2006 – 21st, 19.1 2007 – 16th, 21.6 49ers 2008 – 22nd, 21.2 Bears 2010 – 21st, 20.9 2011 – 17th, 22.1 Career avg: 13th, 24.44 Al Saunders Kansas City (as OC) 2002 – 1st, 29.2 2003 – 1st, 30.2 2004 – 2nd, 30.2 2005 – 6th, 25.2 Redskins (as play calling Assistant Coach) 2006 – 20th, 19.2 2007 – T18th, 20.9 Rams (as OC) 2008 – T30th – 14.5 Career Avg: 11th, 24.2 Mike Mularkey Miami (as OC) 2002 – T8th, 24.4 2003 – 19th, 18,8 2006 – 29th, 16.3 Falcons (as OC) 2008 – 10th, 24.4 2009 – 13th, 22.7 2010 – 5th, 25.9 2011 – 7th, 25.1 Career Avg: 13th, 22.51 Ken Whisenhunt Pittsburgh (as OC) 2004 – 11th, 23.3 2005 – 9th, 24.3 2006 – 12th, 22.2 Arizona (as playcalling HC; other years Whiz had playcalling OC) 2009 – 11th, 23.4 2010 – 26th, 18.1 Career avg: 13th, 22.26 Norv Turner Dallas Cowboys (as OC) 1991 – 7th, 21.4 1992 – 2nd, 25.6 1993 – 2nd, 23.5 Washington Redskins (as playcalling headcoach) 1994 – 13th, 20.0 1995 – 18th, 20.4 1996 – 8th, 22.8 1997 – 15th, 20.4 1998 – 17th, 19.9 1999 – 2nd, 27.7 2000 – 24th, 17.6 (fired after the 13th game) San Diego (as OC) 2001, 14th, 20.8 Miami (as OC) 2002 – 12th, 23.6 2003 – 17th, 19.4 Oakland (as playcalling head coach) 2004 – 18th, 20.0 2005 – 23rd, 18.1 San Francisco (as OC) 2006 – 24th, 18.6 San Diego (as playcalling head coach) 2007 – 5th, 25.8 2008 – 2nd, 27.4 2009 – 4th – 28.4 2010 – 1st, 27.6 2011 –5th, 25.4 2012 – 20th, 21.9 Career Avg: 11.5th , 22.56 Greg Knapp (as OC for every team included here) San Fran 2001 – 3rd, 25.6 2002 – T 13th, 22.9 2003 – 9th, 24.0 Atlanta 2004 – 16, 21.3 2005 – 14th, 21.9 2006 – 25th, 18.3 Raiders 2007- 25th, 17.7 2008 – 29th, 16.4 Seahawks 2009 -25th,  17.5 Raiders 2012 – 26th, 18.1 Career avg: 18.5th, 20.37 Hue Jackson Raiders 2010 (as OC) – 6th, 25.6 2011 (as playcalling headcoach) – 16th, 22.2 Career Avg: 14th, 23.9
