Phil Costa’s chances of winning the Cowboys’ starting center spot took a hit because of a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. According to sources, he does not require surgery but he could miss 2-4 weeks, which would put his availability for the September 11th season opener at the Jets in jeopardy.
Costa did not practice Thursday after suffering the injury in Wednesday’s practice. Before getting hurt Costa continued to work with the first team the last two weeks even with the return of Andre Gurode from June knee surgery. Coach Jason Garrett said Thursday discussions regarding who would start at center had not taken place yet but added he would like Costa could be in the mix.
