It seemed inevitable that if Texas and California kept showing up at the Holiday Bowl, they'd eventually play each other. The Longhorns and Golden Bears will play in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 28, the first matchup between the schools since 1970. Texas will be playing in the Holiday Bowl for the fifth time while Cal is making its third visit. Both teams are 7-5. This matchup comes seven years after California expected to play in the Rose Bowl, only to be shocked to find out that they were leapfrogged in the final BCS standings by Texas, which ended up going to Pasadena and beating Michigan 38-37. After those pairings came out, then-Cal quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Texas coach Mack Brown ''was a little classless'' in begging for poll votes that would help the Longhorns climb in the BCS standings. If getting knocked out of the Rose Bowl wasn't bad enough, the Golden Bears were humiliated 45-31 by Texas Tech in the Holiday Bowl that year. In a statement released by the school Sunday night, Cal coach Jeff Tedford said 2004 ''is a long time ago. I don't remember much about it except for feeling like there was a great opportunity there. We all felt like we were going to the Rose Bowl. However it unfolded, we were left scratching our heads as to how that happened. But that was a long time ago. I felt bad for our team because I really felt like we deserved to be in the Rose Bowl that year, but we're in 2011 now and it is a whole different situation.'' Texas leads the series 4-0 and was ranked in the Top 10 in each previous meeting. The teams haven't met since 1970 in Austin when the Longhorns won, 56-15. Texas also took the first matchup in 1959 in Austin, 33-0. The other games were played in Berkeley, with Texas winning 28-3 in 1961 and 17-0 in 1969. Cal and Texas have scheduled a home-and-home series for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, with the Bears visiting Austin on Sept. 12, 2015, and Texas making a return trip to Berkeley on Sept. 10, 2016. ''It's always an exciting game and playing Cal will be a fun challenge for us,'' Brown said in a statement. ''Jeff Tedford is a great friend who is a tremendous football coach. He's the winningest coach in Cal history, so he's had the Bears playing at a consistently high level for a long time, and we look forward to playing them.'' Cal won three of its final four games. The Golden Bears were 4-5 in the Pac-12 and Texas had the same record in the Big 12.

Rodgers adds notch to perfect 2011

Dave Tollefson was feeling good about the New York Giants' chances of upsetting Green Bay on Sunday. So good that the defensive end mocked Aaron Rodgers by performing the quarterback's celebratory move the pantomimed placement of a title belt around his waist following a fourth-quarter sack. But Tollefson and the rest of the Giants ultimately learned there's a difference...

Packer backers in buying frenzy for share of team

Everyone seems to want a piece of Aaron Rodgers and the reigning Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers - even at $250 a pop. The Packers launched a public stock sale Tuesday morning and the response from fans was akin to a Cyber Monday frenzy. Within the first 11 minutes of the sale, the team said 1,600 orders were placed at a cost of $250 per share. The stock has no value to...

QB Sack Rates

It amazes me how well Aaron Rodgers holds up despite the stunningly high number of sacks he takes.  This week Football Outsiders surveys NFL QBs and finds out who takes a beating and why they do so.  Rodgers has taken 27 sacks thus far.  While that doesn't lead the league (that honor belongs to Sam Bradford) it suprises me that 40% of Rodgers' sacks are "long sacks...

Green Bay Packers 38, New York Giants 35

The Giants tied this game up with 58 seconds left in the game, as they scored too quickly.  Aaron Rodgers quickly drove the Packers right down the field for a 31-yard, game winning field goal from Mason Crosby.  Rodgers completed 28 of 46 passes for 369 yards with 4 TD passes and 1 INT.  He also carried the ball 4 times for 32 yards (8.0 ypc) in this game.  Ryan Grant “led”...

Discount Double Check Late Game Open Thread

Insurance companies spend a ton of money on advertising, and they don’t even have a product anyone really wants. Kind of like Keystone Light. The good news is that most of you will get to watch Aaron Rodgers in to the evening. The bad news is that you’ll have to endure five or six State Farm ads in that time. The rest of the late games are pretty trashy. Cleveland and Arizona...

NFL Week 13 Reactor: Can the Packers Get Any Perfect-er?

Green Bay 38 - New York Giants 35 For as bad as every other game in this afternoon time slot was, this matchup between the Packers and the "good" side of a Jeckyll-and-Hyde Giants team was almost criminally awesome. So far, it's rating a "92" in the memorable scale by fans at NFL.com, and its reel of highlight videos contains a whopping 31 separate plays....

Giants Display Pride, Guts in Last-Second Loss to Packers

The Giants came to play tonight. That is what the fans who witnessed this game will remember. The Giants (6-6) went blow-for-blow with the league’s best team – the Green Bay Packers (12-0) – and lost on a FG as time expired, 38-35. Outside of a victory, you couldn’t have asked for anything more. This was a great game. Giant fans have nothing to be disappointed about tonight...
