Panthers lose Kalil, sign Austin

Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil, who took out a full-page ad guaranteeing a Panthers Super Bowl victory in July, was placed on the season-ending IR after suffering a Lisfranc injury in last Sunday's 16-12 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

This is a devastating loss to a Carolina running game that had been struggling WITH Kalil snapping the ball. Head coach Ron Rivera told the Charlotte Observer that right guard Geoff Hangartner will move over to center while Jeff Byers and Garry Williams will compete to fill in at the open guard position.

In order to shore up the offensive line, the Panthers signed Thomas Austin last Thursday. Austin, who went undrafted out of Clemson in 2010, has played in just three NFL games in his brief career – all with the Houston Texans. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound West Point native began his career on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad, and, most recently, was a member of the New England Patriots practice squad before joining the Panthers.

Olsen's newborn son doing well after surgery

T.J. Olsen, the newborn son of Panthers tight end Greg Olsen, is doing well after undergoing open-heart surgery at Levine Children's Hospital last Thursday.

The surgery, which is an invasive, high-risk operation, was performed to correct a congenital heart defect.

Kara Olsen gave birth to twins by Caesarian section last Tuesday – a daughter Talbot, and T.J., who was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome less than five months into the pregnancy. The condition is typified by an underdeveloped left ventricle and aorta, which causes the right side of the heart to overcompensate if untreated.

Olson tweeted that he brought Talbot home from the hospital on Friday to meet their other son, Tate, who is 16 months old.

The bye week couldn't have come at a better time for Olsen, who was able to spend some valuable time with his family. The sixth-year pro also tweeted about the tremendous support he has received from the team, the fans and the community.

WR Gettis finally returns to practice

David Gettis returned to practice Monday after a lengthy hiatus from football. The third-year wideout spent the first six weeks of this season on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list with a hamstring injury after missing all of last season with a torn ACL.

NFL rules dictate that the Panthers will have a three-week window to activate Gettis to the 53-man roster.
