There were a lot of firsts for the Carolina Panthers in their 35-27 victory against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
Ron Rivera and Cam Newton were triumphant over the Saints for the first time since the pair started a new era in Charlotte last season. Newton also rushed for a career-high 71 yards on 13 carries. Charles Godfrey scored a touchdown for the first time in his five-year NFL career.
But most importantly, this version of the Carolina Panthers, the same team who coughed up eight second-half leads in 2011, finally closed out a good team in the fourth quarter.
The Panthers, who overcame an early 13-7 lead, seized control of the game in the second quarter to take a 21-13 lead into halftime. After extending that lead to 28-13 in the third quarter, the Saints used a Mark Ingram 1-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 28-20 with 12:57 to play.
At this point, every Panthers fan in Bank of America Stadium began holding their breath. They had seen this act before.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers collapsed late on defense, while the Carolina Panthers hung 35 on a staggering New Orleans squad.
Cam Newton talked all week about how much better the Carolina Panthers were on offense then they showed in their season opener. He proved it on Sunday.
While watching the Saints’ defense get dismantled by Cam Newton and the Panthers, I realized I hadn’t had that much fun since that time I was at a construction site and a rusty nail went through my foot. But as painful as it was to watch, I must say I walked away from Sunday’s horrid ordeal with a positive outlook. You see unlike in week 1, this week I was smart enough to...

Week 2 done, with as little as three upsets recorded this time around.
On the side, there was one bitter handshake between two coaches who really had no beef. Another couple of Michael Vick turnovers, a botched field goal by one of the league’s best boots, and a bunch of missed calls that probably made Jay Cutler’s face swirl even more.
The best part of Week 2 though, was more...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers found offense in various forms after a sluggish opener, grinding past the New Orleans Saints with quarterback Cam Newton becoming the third Carolina player to score a rushing touchdown in a 35-27 victory Sunday afternoon at Bank of America Stadium. I bet when you pulled up ESPN.com or NFL.com Monday morning to check out the scores from week 2 in the NFL, you weren’t expecting to see the Patriots loose to the Cardinals or the Cowboys loose to the Seahawks. So much for the 13.5 point spread Vegas gave the Patriots or the premonition from NFL pundits that after their win over the Giants on opening night, the Cowboys were the...

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Carolina Panthers turned an ugly start and 13-7 deficit, that should have been greater, into a 35-27 victory Sunday over NFC South foe New Orleans and in the process restored the good vibe that permeated the franchise in the preseason.

It might still be the beginning of the season, but in week two, the Giants played like they historically do at the end of the year.
Trailing 27-16 in the fourth quarter, Eli Manning put a first half that included three interceptions behind him and ended the game with 510 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Just like their quarterback, the Giants must put their success in game two...
