DETROIT - SEPTEMBER 02: Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey watches the action during the fouth quarter of the preseason game at Ford Field on September 2, 2010 in Detroit, Michigan. The Lions defeated the Bills 28-23. (Photo by Leon Halip/Getty Images)
"You can win the World Series without Babe Ruth.'' On a few occasions, Chan Gailey would tell his coaches this before the Bills hired him as coach. Now, you could view it as being a way to say we can get a team full of good players and win without a star player. It is a team game, right? Standard coach speaking. However, after about two and half seasons worth of signs from Chan, I view it a lot more differently. I view it as a way to say... "My coaching mind will make any player I come across better than they are. So, who needs Babe Ruth when I can make you into Babe Ruth?" Maybe I'm being cynical and just being so over Chan Gailey's philosophy on offense, but there's way more proof about Gailey imposing what he thinks he can do best rather than what is best for the team.  He wants to make Chinese chefs cook up pizza because that's his favorite food. He wants to fit a square peg in a round hole. All those sorts of lame ass analogies you can conger up. He's a silent, albeit, power-crazed czar who believes his methods go beyond reproach. It is never perfect for an NFL team. A great coach can hide the negatives and over accentuate the positives. Bill Parcells was great at adapting to whatever surroundings he had. If Quincy Carter and Jeff Hostetler were his QBs, his teams would be running teams. If he had Bledsoe or Tony Romo, they became passing teams. You adapt to what your surroundings are. Gailey does not. It also doesn't help that he's living in a world where Goo Goo Dolls and Foo Fighters still matter and people listen to Nirvana. Its 1996 in his mind. We don't have kickers attempt 50-yard field goals (Even though 58 of them have been made this year) and drafting a QB is a long term development for years (See: Andy Dalton, RGIII, Big Ben, Joe Flacco and Andrew Luck). He is living in the wrong era. These are 90s points of views. Not shocking when you consider that the Bills front office consists of a 95-year-old owner and a GM in his 70s. The game has evolved while Gailey and the Bills have not. This is the guy who was all about the wildcat, even though everyone and their mother knew the system died 4 years ago. A number of pundits said that was the case when Miami went down the tubes in 2009. I wrote it when the Bills signed Brad Smith. Yet, the Bills decided to spend 3.5 million dollars a year for a stiff because Chan believed he could restore the formation. The turn back the clock phase failed like The Spice Girls reunion. Then there was the selection of CJ Spiller. I know, we all love him. He's great. However, did we really need him with Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch in the fold? No.  Lynch is still killing it in Seattle. Of course, Chan didn't see it that way. He was gushing all about having a scat back before the combine. A running back who was going to catch the ball out of the backfield because that's what he wanted from his system. He needed to have that. What the Bills needed was a defensive player. Not a luxury pick for an overrated offensive system. Then there is the passing element. Do I really have to get into the fact that CJ Spiller is averaging 6.7 yards a carry and is only averaging 11 carries a game? Why do the Bills have to pass constantly? You win games against Miami, Cleveland and KC after rushing the ball 101 times for 459 yards, only to then revert to giving CJ the ball 11 times against teams that aren't blowing you out. The running game works! Why change? Its because Chan likes to pass.He thinks it is the only way he can survive. He also thinks that he can make Ryan Fitzpatrick and Stevie Johnson into Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. E-G-O. His players know it. Stevie Johnson knows it. Why do you think Fitz can't audible? What coach has a veteran QB not have the ability to audible when he sees fit? In Chan's mind: "How dare he change a play?! I can make anyone into Babe Ruth." He can make anyone better than they are, remember? If Gailey is the smartest person in the room like he thinks he is, his smartest move would be to give up his play calling duties. Have Modkins call the offense. I mean, he is the offensive coordinator. I know it's a bold move, but I think maybe Gailey is a better game planner than he is at actually calling the plays. There are plays to be made on the field. You don't have to be a fan, a coach or blogger to know that the Bills can run the football whenever they want, except Gailey can't help himself in calling more pass plays. He's a moth who can't avoid the stupid flame even though he's getting burned. Lets get rid of this burden for him. Yes, suggesting to an egocentric coach to give up play calling duties probably wouldn't add up. However, what else can Gailey do? Babe Ruth isn't walking through that door anytime soon. It's best to compromise your ego before you don't have anything left (See: job) to be egocentrically over. "You can win the World Series without Babe Ruth.''
