Charlie Joiner is stepping away from the NFL after 44 years. The Pro Football Hall of Famer and former San Diego Chargers receiver announced his retirement Tuesday. Joiner was a member of the Chargers' organization for 21 years, including 11 season as a player from 1976 to 1986 and two stints as a coach from 1987 to 1991 and 2008 to 2012. "This is definitely a young man's game, and it's time for new blood, new insight and new ways of doing things," Joiner said. "I think the players need to be introduced to those new things. It's time in my life that, at 65, I should be doing something else." With 586 catches for the Chargers, Joiner was the franchise's career receptions leader before Antonio Gates broke the record in 2011. Joiner's 9,203 receiving yards rank second in team history behind Lance Alworth. Joiner had 750 career catches and 12,146 yards in his 18-year playing career that began in 1969 and included stops with Houston, Cincinnati and the Chargers. "I appreciate all the years of devotion (the fans) had for me," Joiner said.
