San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, already ruled out of Sunday's game, has a tear in his foot that could keep him on the sidelines.
ESPN reported Sunday that Gates is believed to have a tear in the plantar fascia tendon that limited him for most of last season. After missing practice Wednesday and Thursday, he participated in an abbreviated session Friday.
A year ago, Gates attempted to play through the painful injury before sitting out the final six games. His 50 catches for 782 yards were his lowest totals since his 2003 rookie season.
Gates did not play in the season opener but had eight catches for 74 yards last week.
