The great thing about the NFL is that there are so many positions that every year, there is almost always at least one player who has a breakout year on every team, no matter how good or bad the team is. This is one part in a 32 part segment detailing one potential breakout player for the 2012 NFL season on each NFL team. For the Chicago Bears, that player is defensive tackle Henry Melton. Henry Melton played very well in a rotational role last season, playing 639 snaps, primarily pass rush snaps (437), and recording 7 sacks, 9 quarterback hits, and 23 quarterback pressures, good for a very impressive 8.9% rate. At his position, he ranked 3rd in sacks, 2nd in quarterback hits, and 7th in quarterback pressures, despite ranking 13th in pass rush snaps. His pass rush productivity rate was 4th in the league. He also ranked 17th overall on ProFootballFocus at his position, despite playing only the 23rd most snaps. Heading into 2012, the 2009 4th round pick is expected to get a larger rol...

Chicago Bears Film Evaluation: Gabe Carimi

The more film I watch on Gabe Carimi the more concerned I am with him in pass protection.  We are consistently told that Carimi's knee is 100-percent healthy, and given that he played well into the second quarter I assume the Bears are preparing him for the season. However what I consistently see from the Bears first round draft pick from a year ago, is an OT that can be...

Chicago Bears Roster Battle: Chris Spencer and Chilo Rachal

The battle to be the starting left guard for the Chicago Bears is going to come down to the final days of the preseason.  During my film evaluation of the offensive line, I intently focused in on Chilo Rachal and incumbent Chris Spencer.  Spencer is the starter for the time being based on the fact he was one of the best performing offensive linemen of 2011. He was the starting...

Cutler says Bears offense still has work to do

Jay Cutler realizes the product is not quite finished. As potent as the Chicago Bears' offense looked in Saturday's 33-31 preseason win over Washington, he sees work to do. He responded ''two preseason games'' when asked how far the offense has come. The question is: How far can it go? The Bears (tied for 11th in the AP Pro32) believe they now have the...

Bears' rookie safety taken off on stretcher

Safety Brandon Hardin, a third-round pick this year by the Chicago Bears, was carted off the field on a stretcher Saturday after suffering an apparent neck injury against Washington. Hardin was injured while making a headfirst tackle on tight end Logan Paulsen in the third quarter. He lay on the ground for several minutes as team medics tended to him and immobilized his neck, then...

Bears' Hardin taken from field on cart

Bears backup safety Brandon Hardin was taken from the field on a cart because of a neck injury early in the third quarter Saturday night in a preseason game against the Washington Redskins. Chicago's Lorenzo Booker had just returned the opening kickoff of the second half 105 yards for a touchdown, when Hardin went down. He was injured trying to tackle Logan Paulsen on a 19-yard...

Robbie Gould’s 57 yard field goal with 1:33 left to play lifted the Chicago Bears to a 33-31 victory over the visiting Washington Redskins Saturday night at Soldier Field. In a wild finish to a game that the Bears had dominated through three quarters, Chicago fourth-string quarterback Matt Blanchard directed the Bears into field goal position, and Gould connected on [...]
