The 49ers already received a second-round pick in the 2013 draft from the Kansas City Chiefs for Alex Smith. Another pick in 2014 was conditional on how the Chiefs performed in Year 1 with Smith at quarterback. If the Chiefs, who were 2-14 last season, finished with eight victories or better, the 49ers would receive Kansas City’s second-round selection in 2014. If the Chiefs were sub-.500, the 49ers would get a third-round selection. After eight games, the Chiefs are the only unbeaten team in the NFL. And the 49ers are guaranteed to receive Kansas City’s second-round pick. If the 49ers would like to see that pick acquired from the Chiefs to be the best-possible selection, they would now like to see the Chiefs go into a tailspin and fail to make the playoffs.
