Kansas City coach Todd Haley said on a conference call with Denver reporters this morning that he fully expects the Broncos to continue to run a read-option offense against the Chiefs Sunday in Kansas City.

“I wouldn’t be sad if we didn’t see it,” Haley said, laughing. “I think that it’s a multidimensional offense, and it’s becoming that more and more each week as guys get comfortable with what they’re doing, and who they are doing it with. It is pretty impressive right now.”

To prepare, the Chiefs will have their own left-handed quarterback try to mimic in practice what Tebow does in games.

That player would be backup quarterback Tyler Palko, the former Pitt star. Palko doesn’t quite stack up to Tebow physically, at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, but Haley thinks he is the best fit to simulate Tebow’s dual-threat style.

“He’s very athletic, so we’re going to count on him some,” Haley said.

The only trick is that there is no way Haley will let any of his defensive starters come close to hitting their backup quarterback in practice. For full-contact drills, Haley will swap in one of the team’s bigger backup receivers.

“It’s going to be a full-team project this week to make sure we’re ready in all three phases,” Haley said.

Broncos and Chiefs fans — and, well, anyone else who chooses to watch Sunday’s game on CBS — will once again see a bearded Haley on the sidelines. There was the thought that Haley was growing his facial hair out of superstition during the Chiefs’ four-game win streak. That streak ended with a home loss to Miami last week.

“My grooming habits have nothing to do with our team,” Haley said. “Really, it’s the last thing I’m worried about.”
