For the past few months it has become increasingly clear that Oregon head football coach Chip Kelly will get some serious NFL offers at the end of the 2012 season. While speculation has run rampant about Kelly’s future, now we have reports of concrete interest from an NFL team. A source told ProFootballWeekly that Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has already met with Kelly during a visit to Oregon. There are no rules against an NFL general manager meeting with a college coach, so such a meeting could take place without causing much comment. We should all be prepared for Kelly’s name to be connected to a lot of NFL coaching gigs this offseason. The Eagles make sense, but so do the Carolina Panthers, while the Dallas Cowboys would also love to make a big-name hire. Of course, none of those jobs are actually open yet, but it’s a pretty safe bet that all three will be vacant along with several other spots (Kansas City and San Diego come to mind). The Eagles need a radically different vision than that of Andy Reid in charge of the team. Kelly has a unique offensive system and has gotten results with it at the collegiate level. Sure, it would be a big gamble for Philadelphia to take a chance on Kelly, but after almost 14 years of the same guy in charge, the Eagles need some kind of a jolt. With possible NCAA sanctions coming for Oregon thanks to a recruiting scandal, now is the time for Kelly to bolt from Eugene. He almost left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers job in January, but backed out at the last minute. Kelly’s stock won’t get any higher by sticking around with the Ducks. Which means he is likely gone this offseason. It appears the Eagles have made the first move in courting him.
