Michael To Take Page Out of Silver Linings Playbook So, I THINK the Seattle Seahawks’ Percy Harvin is having surgery. The entire nation talked about it for a day, and the Pacific Northwest hasn’t stopped bickering about it. It is certainly a shot to the groin. Here you have this exciting team, and then you add one of the most exciting players to it, only to be hurt before the season even begins. It’s kind of like your parents getting you that Nintendo 64 you had always wanted, letting you unwrap it and then taking a sledgehammer to it right before your youthful eyes. It hurts. But that doesn’t change the fact that you still have a Super Nintendo and Playstation to keep you entertained – more 90s video game references you say? We can go on without Percy Harvin, but he isn’t the only one sitting out of practices. In fact, there were 20 in all, including names such as Zach Miller and Sidney Rice (who is apparently getting a blood injection treatment in Switzerland that isn’t allowed in the US). Seahawks had 20 players sitting out today. But Carroll said all but Harvin should be ready for the season. — Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) August 1, 2013 Most of these are likely precautionary, and the players will be ready to go by week one. But for now, while the starters sit, there is a silver lining in the mix – the gaping window of opportunity for the young bucks. Who will step up to the challenge? Keep an eye on Christine Michael. Christine Michael has a chance to shine as a returner in Percy Harvin’s absence. (Photo: Joe Nicholson/USA TODAY Sports) Players have been stepping up in the starters’ absences – i.e. Chris Harper – on offense, defense and even special teams. Harvin’s injury leaves a void in several areas on the roster, considering his versatility. He is known as one of the most electrifying return men in the game. With Leon Washington now in New England, Percy was likely to fill his shoes. Now someone will need to rise to the occasion. Christine Michael was drafted with the Seahawks’ first pick of 2013 because of his raw athleticism and domination in the NFL combine. If there is ever a scenario to show off your athletic ability, it is putting the ball in your hands with an open field. Pete Carroll spoke of this position battle after Thursday’s practice, and praised Michael’s ability: “He’s done nothing but good stuff. He’s very quick, lightning quick, a really good worker, he finishes, he makes an impression to you all the time about how he’s willing to bust his tail to get down the field and finish runs, finish blocks and all that stuff. He’s fast, and he’s picking things up so he’s doing good.” He continued to note Golden Tate, Bryan Walters and Jeremy Lane are also competing for the position of kick returner. It is upsetting that Percy won’t be returning that season-opening kick, but it is exciting that Michael just may be. Players have made careers out of kick returning — Devin Hester, Leon Washington, Dante Hall — and if he is successful, he just may be given the ball in the backfield more often as well. “I think Robert Turbin is in deep deep trouble” Per Dick Fain on KJR (He’s impressed with Christine Michael) #Seahawks — Q Smith™ (@NWSBQ) August 1, 2013 By no means am I saying we give Marshawn Lynch less carries. But it is just good to know that we have a healthy competition at the spell position. GO HAWKS!!! CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THE SEAHAWKS BLOG PAGE IN OUR CLUBHOUSE SECTION AT NWSB!
