In 2012, it was undrafted rookie receiver Rod Streater that flashed early in minicamp and caught Raiders coach’s eyes. Coach Dennis Allen in his second year as coach could have a similar success with undrafted free agent Connor Vernon, who he coached in the 2013 Senior Bowl. A product of Duke University, Vernon was called ‘Wes Welker like’ and a ‘technician’ by Mel Kiper Jr. However, unlike Welker, Vernon is 6’1 and 200 pounds and could easily play outside the hashmarks. According to Vic Tafur of SFGate.com, Vernon could be the next good find for the team at wideout in the undrafted free agent market in consecutive years. Tafur writes: ‘Setting ACC records for career receptions (283) and receiving yards (3,749) during his senior season, Vernon had 85 catches for 1,074 yards and eight touchdowns during his final year with the Blue Devils. He went to the Senior Bowl, where he caught the eye of the Raiders coaching staff (on the North team) and quarterback Tyler Wilson — who was drafted by Oakland in the fourth round.’ On his chemistry with Wilson at the Senior Bowl: “That first day of practice it was really different.” “It was basically my first time being thrown to by a guy that was not (former Duke quarterback) Sean (Renfree) in four years. It was definitely a little different but by the end of the week we were feeling really comfortable with each other.”
