According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys have their work cut out for them. As they continue to re-work deals, the Cowboys find themselves $7 million over the cap and time is running out. All NFL teams must comply with the new salary cap by 4:00pm Tuesday, or be penalized, something the Cowboys could ill afford. Already crippled by the punishment from the NFL for spending too much in an uncapped year, the team just can’t take any more restrictions. Restructuring quarterback Tony Romo would provide the most relief, but there are a handful of others that can be redone. Moore writes: ‘Nose tackle Jay Ratliff, cornerback Orlando Scandrick, linebacker Dan Connor, backup quarterback Kyle Orton and guards Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau have all been approached about re-working their deals. Look for several of those to be finalized Monday. The Cowboys can create significant room by signing quarterback Tony Romo to an extension and lowering his $16.8 million cap hit. There is no indication the two sides are close to an agreement. But the club doesn’t need Romo to agree to a new deal in order to be in compliance Tuesday afternoon.’ var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});
