Just a few hours after posting trade rumors about Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd, I am now discussing the same issue over Hurd’s buddy, Patrick Crayton. Unlike Hurd, there have not been specific reports about the possibilities of the seventh-year receiver being dealt. Instead, there are only rumors and speculations humming through the Metroplex like rush hour traffic on I-635. That buzz only further infuriates Crayton, but he won’t let you know it. In an interview on ESPN’s Ben & Skin Show, Crayton said he is leaving it “up to the man upstairs” to take care of him and put him “in the right place.” When asked how he feels about the trade rumors, Crayton replied, “Whatever happens, happens.” You’ve got to give the man credit for coming to the Cowboys’ training camp after sitting out of OTAs when team owner Jerry Jones did not grant him his request to be released. At least Crayton didn’t throw a fit and kick footballs around during practice like former Bronco Brandon Marshall. Many will argue that Crayton does not have the right to act like a diva anyway because he’s not on the same talent level as Marshall. Regardless of his pleasant attitude, the longtime Cowboy is apparently on the trading block and might be dressing in a different NFL uniform for the first time very soon.
Teams interested in Hurd have been mentioned, but there have been no such reports regarding Crayton. It would be highly unwise for Dallas to get rid of their most experienced receiver just before the start of one of the most anticipated seasons in recent franchise history. Crayton called himself an insurance policy for Cowboys first-round draft pick Dez Brynt and became just that when Bryant went down with a high ankle sprain in late July. What if Bryant goes down again? What if Crayton and Hurd are both dealt within the next week? Unless Dallas gets an adequate receiver in return, Crayton’s insurance policy would come in handy if either Bryant or starters Miles Austin and Roy Williams get injured during the season. Every finger in Texas would be pointed at team owner Jerry Jones if Crayton’s departure was the cause for the Cowboys’ failure to make the Super Bowl this year. As a mainly third option last year, Crayton almost posted identical numbers to Williams. That’s enough evidence for me to keep him.

With Dez Bryant in the mix, either Hurd, Crayton or Ogletree is on the chopping block. Roy Williams would be if his contract wasn't too expensive to absorb.
