Although the Cowboys scored an impressive 36-31 victory over the New York Giants tonight, there’s certainly some buzz around the team and locker room about where they can improve and questions that will certainly need answers before they face the Kansas City Chiefs on September 15th. Romo in obvious pain after his rib injury It’s always good to look ahead. Here’s what the Cowboys are facing this week. 1. Tony Romo’s Ribs- The Cowboys superstar quarterback will face a lot of questions this week regarding the status of his upper body area near his ribs. Romo was sandwiched on an extremely scary play, and stayed on the ground for several minutes before walking off on his own power. The team said Romo only had the wind knocked out of him, but frankly that’s quite hard to believe. It was obvious Romo was in pain all night after walking off on his power. He seemed a little more gun-shy in the pocket and avoided making some throws that left him vulnerable to some big hits. The true injury status of his ribs will be big news at the Cowboys facility this week. 2. Brian Waters Situation- Cowboys guard Brian Waters practiced for three days with the first and second team offense leading up to their game with the Giants earlier this evening. While Waters says he feels familiarized with the offense, the team elected to keep him out of action, allowing him another week to get acclimated to their system. If all goes according to plan, Waters is essentially a shoe-in to start at right guard for the Cowboys, replacing Mackenzy Bernadeau. Bernadeau’s struggles were magnified when he was one of the linemen who missed his block on Romo’s injury. Keep in mind Waters played most of his career in Kansas City, so the game will be a homecoming for him. Waters is a definite upgrade over Bernadeau and will significantly bolster the line. 3. Focus on stopping the yards- The defensive unit did produce six turnovers, but they in fact did give up too many yards against the Giants. Eli Manning threw for 450 yards and had three receivers produce 100-yard games. The ‘Boys know they have to be better than that to become that premiere defense they’re capable of becoming. Expect Kiffin’s game plan this week to limit plays downfield.
