Two of the Dallas Cowboys top three free agents have been allowed to roam for greener pastures. The Cowboys are not trying very hard to keep their two veteran defensive starters because the team announced on Monday that both players would be unrestricted free agents regardless if there’s a new collective bargaining agreement.
Dallas used a first-round pick on defensive end Marcus Spears in 2005 and he has started every year since. The Cowboys kept Spears in 2010 with a less than flattering tender that was less than what fellow ends Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher made. On Monday, Spears tweeted, “Testing the market folks! Thank you all in Dallas for the support. It’s still possible I could be back, but it’s shaky.”
Strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh signed with the Cowboys in 2009 after four years in Jacksonville. He publicly said he hoped to sign a multi-year deal with Dallas in 2010, but team owner and general manager Jerry Jones only offered him a one-year deal. It appears Jones is not focused on keeping Sensabaugh. However, the Cowboys have no other option at strong safety unless there is a plan to convert one of the young cornerbacks.
