The Dallas Cowboys’ season is as done as everyone’s Thanksgiving turkey. After losing an important divisional tilt at home to the Washington Redskins, 38-31, on Thanksgiving, the Cowboys are left with the same issues that they are always left with: terrible play-calling, terrible game management, bad offensive production, porous secondary production. Robert Griffin III, the rookie from Baylor, carved up the Cowboys for 311 yards and 4 TDs as the Redskins dropped 28 on the Cowboys in the second quarter and raced to a 28-3 halftime lead. Dez Bryant continues to do his part, scoring 2 TDs and getting the Cowboys back in it. He cannot be blamed for this loss. This left the Cowboys trying to claw back, and they got some help from an 85-yard catch and run for a TD from Dez Bryant to cut it to 28-13, and then in the no-huddle, the Cowboys would eventually whittle the lead down to 35-28 on another Dez Bryant TD. But it was too little too late as Dallas showed poor clock management down the stretch after falling behind 38-28, and they had to settle for a Dan Bailey 51-yd FG with 12 seconds left, and then botched the onside kick. Tired of the Dallas Cowboys and their poor performance, I shut the TV off at halftime. I figure if the team is going to be listless, my fandom for them will be too. This was a winnable game if they just decided to show up. However, now this loss means they have to win all 5 of their remaining games if they hope to grab a playoff berth, because the Washington victory has lifted them back into the playoff discussion, especially if the Giants lose to the Packers on Sunday, With 2 of the remaining 5 games being against Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, I don’t see how the Cowboys can win all 5. It was poor game management at the end though, because most of the Cowboys passes were down the middle, and they were forced to use their lone remaining timeout with 45 seconds left. They didn’t run enough sideline outs or throw for the end zone enough to try and leave ample time, and their timeout, to try and complete the comeback. It is exhausting me to keep going over and pointing out the same problems week in and week out with this team. The worst part is that there are going to be no changes: no new coach, no new QB, no new GM, no new anything. There are coaches out there to be had, and there will be even more if San Diego and Philadelphia decide to make their moves. Also, there are GMs out there, legitimate GMs anyway, that can be brought in. However, because the powers that be in the Cowboys organization cannot see the forest from the trees, it is not worth mentioning any of this. Instead, a listless team continues to worse, and at least for this fan, the disinterest in the team is at an all-time high. And it appears to be that way everywhere. Dallas Cowboys fans no longer seem to care about the team because the team doesn’t care about itself. The Cowboys can rebound and go to 6-6 with a December 2nd win over Philadelphia, but really, they will just be going through the motions the next 5 weeks. This game went totally right for the Redskins, and totally wrong for the Cowboys. Romo threw 2 INTs to bring his total up to 15, one shy of his career high. Miles Austin got injured on the opening drive pf the game, and with Kevin Ogletree out, the WRs for the Cowboys were scarce, as it came down to Dwayne Harris, Dez Bryant, and Cole Beasley, along with TE Jason Witten, shouldering the receiving load. Orlando Scandrick also broke his wrist, and will require season-ending surgery. When all is said and done on the injury front, the Cowboys don’t have enough pieces to put together a run. This loss was the final death knell in their season. With the long layover, I will give my outline next week of what changes the Cowboys need to make – what critical changes anyway, come the offseason. With the playoff hopes all but dead, it’s time to look to next season and take a hard look at this team.
