Dallas Cowboys OLB Anthony Spencer is scheduled to become a free agent, but reports out of Dallas are that the Cowboys are considering the franchise tag for him. That according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Spencer has never had more than six sacks in a season, but there are some NFL personnel people that believe he’s been miscast in Dallas’ 3-4 defense and would benefit from a switch to a 4-3 front as a weak side defensive end. That’s a position where Spencer flourished in college at Purdue, leaving us at Buffalobills.com to wonder if he’d be a pass rushing option for Buffalo in free agency. This news that the Cowboys are considering franchising Spencer is perplexing knowing they already have $40M guaranteed in Pro Bowl pass rusher DeMarcus Ware as part of a six-year $78M contract. To guarantee another $8.8M to Spencer would be surprising, but the report said it’s being discussed because the Cowboys aren’t sure they want to create another hole...

The Dallas Cowboys hired Joe Baker as assistant secondary coach on Monday. The move comes four weeks after the Cowboys hired Jerome Henderson to replace Dave Campo as secondary coach. Baker has been an NFL assistant coach for 16 years and spent the last three with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Baker joins Henderson in taking over a secondary that contended for worst in the NFL in 2011.
