Defense isn't living up to billing

IRVING - Wade Phillips promised a faster, tougher defense. So far, there's been no sign of such a unit. In the opener against Tampa Bay, DeMarcus Ware and Co. gave up 174 rushing yards. Last night in losing to the Giants, the Cowboys surrendered 330 yards through the air. Giants receivers Mario Manningham (10 catches for 150 yards) and Steve Smith (10 catches for 134 yards) looked like Hall of Famers as they took turns burning Terence Newman, Orlando Scandrick and Mike Jenkins. In his first start in the base defense, Scandrick missed tackle after tackle. "I didn't tackle well," he admitted. "I felt like I didn't have a very good week of preparation. I need to get focused and be mroe accountable to my teammates." Wade Phillips indicated he could name Jenkins as the starter at right corner. "We are going to look at it and see," Phillips said. "We didn't cover No. 12 (Smith) at all the whole game."
