In a follow-up of the report that surfaced a few days ago concerning the lack of progress on a new deal for franchise left tackle Ryan Clady, it seems as if there's been some positive progress since then. Mike Klis is reporting that the Denver Broncos are eagerly pursuing a long-term deal with Clady. The new contract being offered is for 5 years and $50 million.

The problem is, is that Clady apparently wants a deal in the neighborhood of what Browns tackle Joe Thomas got. For those that don't know, Thomas received a 7 year, $84 million deal. Clady's agent Pat Dye, says the deal that the Broncos offered Clady "won't get it done".

Clady is the definition of a franchise tackle. In all likelihood, he'll end up in the Broncos' Ring of Fame one day, and may potentially even enter the Hall of Fame if his longevity holds up. There is no doubt that he is the No. 1 concern on the minds of the Broncos' front brass. The issue here is, can the Broncos afford to pay Clady this money? They're already paying Peyton Manning nearly $20 million over the course of 5 years.

Can you imagine paying Clady what the Browns gave Thomas, which is $12 million per year? That's $32 million tied up to two players alone. That simply isn't a formula for winning football, no matter how important the left tackle and quarterback positions are.

If Clady doesn't back down from his contract demands, I would expect the Broncos to franchise tag Clady for 2013 following this season. If Clady continues to persist in huge monetary demands, it wouldn't come as a shock if the Broncos choose to allow Clady to walk in 2014, while already having drafted a young tackle in the 2013 NFL Draft.

No matter how you look at it, as valuable and as good as Clady is, it would come as a shock if the Broncos were to pay Clady what the Browns pay Thomas.
