The Broncos announced in an official press release on Tuesday the signings of Caleb Hanie and Dan Koppen. In the process of signing both veterans, the Broncos were forced to clear up two roster spots, and they did so by placing DT Ty Warren on injured reserve for the second straight season while releasing backup center C.J. Davis.

Hanie was released a day before the season opener vs. Pittsburgh last week in a salary-cap move. As I wrote last week, I expected the Broncos to re-sign Hanie soon after. The Broncos could go one game without Hanie, save over a $1 million in cap space, and then re-sign him later on for a smaller contract. That is what they did Tuesday.

Koppen is a nine-year NFL veteran, having been drafted by the Patriots in 2003. Up until fracturing his ankle in Week 1 of the 2011 season, Koppen had been the Patriots' starting center his rookie season. Koppen is expected to back up J.D. Walton.

C.J. Davis had made the Broncos' roster as the top backup center to Walton, ahead of fourth-round draft pick Philip Blake. Davis entered the NFL with the Carolina Panthers in 2009 as an undrafted free agent.

Blake will apparently remain in the third-string role at center. I had expected the Broncos to move Blake to the practice squad, but the Broncos apparently see the need to keep him on the 53-man roster.
