Over the weekend, the Philadelphia Eagles used their franchise tag on DeSean Jackson

Days after Plaxico Burress publicly stated he wanted to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, the team placed the franchise tag on DeSean Jackson. They issued the following statement:

“We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that. DeSean is a talented player and a proven playmaker in this league and we look forward to him continuing his career in Philadelphia. It’s our understanding that he has the same desire. We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him.”

Could we really see Burress and Jackson on the edges in Philly? No, the team could likely only handle one salary and certainly only one malcontent. So it would appear they have chosen Jackson.

Or have they? Do they really want a player who carried such poor effort, work habits and attitude for another year? Especially one demanding a long-term deal being signed to one year for roughly $9 million as would be required by the franchise tag?

No. The tag gives them bargaining power to get a good trade for him. But given his troubles, they may very well be stuck with him. Over the week, I will look at the limited number of potential trading partners Philadelphia has and the receiver competition that may drive his price down…
