Never underestimate the importance of a tight end. Well, at least that's what the Indianapolis Colts must think.
By drafting two of the top tight end prospects in the 2012 NFL draft the Colts want to make sure Andrew Luck can get rid of the ball quickly if need be.
Luck may be familiar with former Stanford Cardinal teammate Coby Fleener, but Dwayne Allen could be the difference maker.

First and 10 with Coby Fleener
ESPN gave Colts tight end Coby Fleener the once-over in its series on ten players they've deemed "rising stars." Fleener clearly knows things are about to change:
What’s the biggest difference between being a college football star and a pro football player? The biggest transition is going to be the idea that it’s one, a job, and two, it’s my only responsibility.
Luck ready to get started
Austin Collie recently had dinner with Andrew Luck and noticed the rookie quarterback is getting twitchy:
Luck's last final exam is Thursday, then he can attend the Colts' June 12-14 mandatory minicamp. He has been trying to stay sharp at Stanford with private workouts, but Colts wide receiver Austin Collie said it has been a challenging time for his new teammate.

Dunlevy: What if Luck was a mistake?
The worst scenario for many Colts fans is that Peyton Manning AND Robert Griffin III are rock stars for the next five years while Andrew Luck bombs. I don't see it happening, but Nate Dunlevy runs down the doomsday scenarios just in case:
There are basically three believable ways that Andrew Luck can fail. Obviously, he could wig out a la Jeff George or Ryan Leaf, but not even...
Andrew Luck set to join Colts in camp
Andrew Luck's long, anxious wait to start practicing with the Colts is almost over.
After the Colts wrap up mini-camp and Luck finishes his final college classes Thursday, the No. 1 overall draft pick will finally start throwing passes to his new teammates when the Colts reconvene for a mandatory mini-camp next week.
Those who have spoken to Luck say he can't wait.
Luck...
Colts profess graduate Luck will be ready for minicamp
INDIANAPOLIS -- While rookie quarterback Andrew Luck isn't due back to participate in his first full-team mini-camp practice until next week, the Indianapolis Colts wrapped up organized team activity practices with a workout Thursday at the team's West 56th Street headquarters. Luck finishes up his architectural design classes at Stanford this week and is scheduled to...
Colts backfield situation could hinder Andrew Luck development in 2012
As the Indianapolis Colts prepare for the 2012 season, there are some serious questions surrounding the Indianapolis backfield and their ability to mount a successful running game. The inability to run the ball in 2012 could hinder rookie QB Andrew Luck’s development in 2012. Last season, then rookie QB Cam Newton benefited from a solid rushing attack from the Carolina Panthers...
Why Austin Collie might surprise
With a new coaching staff in Indianapolis, combined with a complete roster rebuild, it’s hard to project future statistics when it comes to the Colts. Through his three seasons in Indianapolis, Austin Collie has an average of 57+ catches for 613 yards and 5+ Touchdowns. Although his catch and yard totals didn’t change much [...]
Indianapolis signs cornerback Justin King
The Indianapolis Colts have made another attempt to shore up their secondary by signing free agent cornerback Justin King.
King was the Rams' fourth-round draft pick in 2008 and played the past four seasons in St. Louis. He started 19 games and recorded 131 tackles with the Rams.
His best season came in 2011. King finished with a career-high 63 tackles and recorded the first...
Arrested Development: Colts edition
There are at least two things that were more enjoyable to watch in 2006 than today: the Colts and Arrested Development. Nate Dunlevy combines two of my favorite pasttimes in one article.
Yet, he left off one quote I think sums up the situation:
Barry Zuckerkorn: Are all the guys in here... you know? [referencing gay inmates]George Sr.: Oh, no, no. No, not all of them.Barry Zuckerkorn...
Colts continue OTAs while waiting on Luck
The Colts' top two draft picks aren't in attendance for this week's OTAs while quarterback Andrew Luck and tight end Coby Fleener take their final exams at Stanford, but coach Chuck Pagano said he's extremely pleased with where the team is at. Owner Jim Irsay tweeted on Tuesday that a deal with Luck is "getting close," and the expectation is a contract...
Colts hold running back competition
Getty Images
Having veteran quarterbacks compete with each other and rookies for their place as a starter seems to be the new trend this offseason, (think Arizona’s and Miami’s competitions for starting QB) and now the Indianapolis Colts have decided to set the next trend by holding a running back battle in training camp. Donald Brown, the former Colts first round draft pick...
Colts offensive line got bigger
As I pointed out earlier, unbridled optimism about the offensive line is likely ill-informed. There is however some reason for optimism writes Phil Richards--they got bigger:
"We are going to be pretty big up front," said Goodwin, who spent the past five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he worked under new Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. "I think...
Colts Sign WR Kris Adams; Waive LB Kevin Eagan
The Colts have signed free-agent WR Kris Adams and waived OLB Kevin Eagan. Adams, a UTEP alum, was undrafted coming out of college but spent most of last season on the practice squads of Chicago, St. Louis and Minnesota. The Vikings, who signed Adams on Dec. 14, re-signed the 6-foot-3, 194-pound receiver in January, but released him May 14. Adams finished his college career ranked...
The Silliness of Mainstream Media Perspectives Regarding Colts Offensive Questions
While it certainly comes as no surprise that NFL talking heads and mainstream media sources would ask a lot of questions about the short-term future of the Indianapolis Colts offense, many of the questions that are being raised seem like the wrong ones. ESPN's Paul Kuharsky raised questions about the offensive line and the NFL's Gregg Rosenthal expressed concerns about the...
Winning Over a City and Growing a Fanbase, Part I
Over the last few weeks, much has been made over the Colts' (irrelevant) "issues" to sell their season tickets. Because of the slight drop in season ticket renewals, Indianapolis natives and fans have been berated for being fickle, fair-weather, and flaky (among others).
I find this all to be an extreme exaggeration, for reasons that I laid out earlier this year...
