When we think of underrated and overrated players on a football team, we tend to search for the quarterback or the player who just got the new contract after one year of stellar play. We never think of the backup guard or the third-down pass rusher. And we never think of the coach. This might be one of those articles where a case can be made for a coach hanging on too long and doing more harm to the franchise than good. When Jim Schwartz was named the head coach to the Detroit Lions, I thought the hire was solid - a defensive mind to counter the potential high power offensive engine in Michigan.Schwartz was not the solution to the problem in his first two seasons 2009 and 2010, posting records of 2-14 and 6-10. The 2010 season however saw the Lions win their last four games, giving fans hope this team was on the rise.In 2011, Schwartz took his Lions led by the arm of Matthew Stafford and the pass catching of Calvin Johnson to the playoffs. The team was young and hungry and appeared to...

Lions coach Schwartz focuses on few bright spots

Given a couple days to cool down after Detroit's lackluster performance in Cleveland, Lions coach Jim Schwartz was ready to move on and focus on the few bright spots. Getting All-Pro receiver Calvin Johnson back on the practice field and adding three veteran defensive players to the roster helped further brighten the mood on a sunny afternoon at the team's training facility...

Stafford talks streaker

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was on the field early Thursday night in Cleveland, getting ready for a preseason game, and couldn't understand why stadium security was practicing chasing down a streaker. "This one guy would run around like a streaker and they'd chase it down," Stafford said during a postgame news conference. "I was like, 'When...

Bruised knee sidelines Megatron

Detroit Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson will miss Thursday nights preseason game at Cleveland because of a bruised knee. The injury is not believed to be serious. The decision to sit Johnson was for precautionary reasons. Patrick Edwards, an undrafted player last year out of the University of Houston, is expected to start in Johnsons place. EXTRA POINT Bill Ford Jr., the Lions...

Joique Bell May Be The Right Fantasy Handcuff For Reggie Bush

Detroit running back Joique Bell and not Mikel Leshoure may be the No. 2 man behind oft-injured starter Reggie Bush.Fantasy Spin:Bell is getting more opportunities than Leshoure who was on the field for just seven plays in Thursday's exhibition game against Cleveland. Bell is a better pass receiver and had a better ypc average last season and appears at this time to be the handcuff...

Lackluster Lions fall to Browns

On Thursday night, the Detroit Lions looked like many season-ticket holders throughout the league during the preseason. They were no-shows. The Lions starters got off to a terrible start. They were totally lethargic and ineffective in the first half of 24-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. Heres how coach Jim Schwartz summed up their effort during...

Streaker interrupts Browns-Lions game, gets lit up for his efforts (video)

An actual, real-life streaker — not the so-called “streakers” who run on to sports fields fully clothed — bared a lot of skin (perhaps too much) as he interrupted the Detroit Lions-Cleveland Browns preseason game during the third quarter on Thursday night. Reports out of Cleveland indicate that Lions running back Joique Bell tried to […]The post Streaker interrupts Browns...

First Down, Fourth Down: Lions Struggle Against Browns

It was another unimpressive outing for the Detroit Lions in the preseason, falling to the Cleveland Browns 24-6 in a sloppy performance. First Down: Reggie Bush Bush was brought into the Lions organization as a replacement for Jahvid Best and potential game changer. While he didn’t change the game last night, he was the only serviceable part of the offense. Carrying the ball eight...

Lions bringing in veteran players after poor game

APNewsNow. Jim Schwartz insists that he's not trying to send any of his players a message. That's not going to stop him from bringing in veteran players, though. After bringing in four defenders in the wake of a poor performance Thursday in Cleveland, the Lions signed offensive tackle Kevin Haslem, who has played 10 games in a three-year career. Now on his fifth NFL team...

Lions relying on veteran presence to aid defense

The Lions have looked like anything but a solid team this preseason, and it has irked head coach Jim Schwartz. Although some, including yours truly, have criticized the talent that has been assembled in Detroit, the Lions are still trying to better themselves. Since the Lions were outplayed in every way by the Cleveland Browns, the team has added three veteran defensive players...
