The Detroit Lions have brought back their best cornerback from last season, Rashean Mathis. Signed to be a mentor to younger players on the Lions roster during the 2013 season, Mathis ended up starting 13 games after replacing the struggling Darius Slay in the lineup. Mathis totaled 47 totals and a team high 15 passes defended. Early in his career Mathis had been an all-pro with the Jacksonville Jaguars. This will be his 12th season and his second one with the Lions. He has 30 career interceptions, but none during the last two seasons. Mathis will never be the player he was, but he was much better than the Lions expected last year and maybe if he has able to continue to mentor Slay, Bill Bentley and Chris Greenwood, his worth will not be measured on his field production. At worst, Mathis is a solid nickel back option and provides depth. If Chris Houston is able to regain his form of two years ago and one of the young players already on the roster continues to show improvement, the cornerback position will not be as much of a concern as it currently is. It’s still a position of weakness for the Lions and coach Jim Caldwell, and will be considered that until proven otherwise, but it certainly got better today.
