Found May 23, 2012 on Football Nation:
It's just the running game... That has become the excuse of late. People keep pointing to the Giants, Packers and the Patriots last year saying that the days of needing a running game are over. All you need is that elite quarterback and you're set. While to some extent this is true, really, they aren't the standard for offense. The standard last year was the New Orleans Saints. No one ever found a way to stop that offense. In fact, had it not been for an amazing disappearing act on the part of the defense at San Francisco, it's doubtful they would have lost the NFC Championship or the Super Bowl. That is the standard. That is what the Lions are shooting for. The passing game is right there. Now the Lions need the running game to step up. The Lions have three horses in the stable. Mikel Leshoure was sidelined with an Achilles injury last year. Jahvid Best once again had concussion issues. Kevin Smith suffered from the same recurring leg injuries that have plag...

2 game suspension for Mikel Leshoure?

After missing all of last season with injury, Mikel Leshoure got arrested twice this offseason in marijuana related incidents. Given that he has a past criminal history dating back to his time at Illinois, most expect him to be given some sort of suspension by commissioner Roger Goodell, which would further delay the 2nd round pick’s NFL debut. According to the Detroit News, that...

Knee injury of Lions’ Stephen Tulloch worse than originally believed?

Stephen Tulloch is one of the best middle linebackers in the league, especially in Detroit’s wide nine scheme, and was paid accordingly this offseason, signing a 5 year, 25 million dollar deal. However, there are now injury concerns with Tulloch. Tulloch has yet to practice in OTAs with a knee injury and while it was originally viewed as minor, Head Coach Jim Schwartz now says...

Young hopes to be big fish for Lions

ALLEN PARK, Mich. - You know you're a fishing fanatic when that's your sack dance in the NFL. Detroit Lions defensive end Willie Young put his creative celebration on display during last year's Monday Night game against the Chicago Bears. After throwing quarterback Jay Cutler to the ground, Young went into a fly-fishing routine that ended with him pretending to reel...

Nate Burleson: Lions need less emotion sometimes

Nate Burleson says he didn't see what fellow Detroit Lions receiver Titus Young did to get himself dismissed from team workouts this week. Burleson says he doesn't know if Young punched, pushed or shoved safety Louis Delmas. But he says the Lions are a tough team that needs to learn how to dial down emotions at times. Burleson says it will be business as usual for Young...

Lions expect both Jahvid Best and Mikel Leshoure to be healthy

The Lions have used picks in the first 2 rounds on running backs in their last two drafts prior to this year, as well as a 3rd round pick on a running back in 2008, yet they keep having to turn to the mediocre and aging Maurice Morris down the stretch to get significant carries for them. This is because Jahvid Best, a 1st rounder in 2010, Mikel Leshoure, a 2nd rounder in 2011, and...

Lions hit the ground running in the Motor City

Matthew Stafford had Jahvid Best in the backfield, tight ends Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler on the inside, and receiver Calvin Johnson on the outside. Familiar faces and coaching continuity all helped the Detroit Lions hit the ground running in their first of 10 organized team workouts Monday. ''We all know what we're doing out there,'' Stafford said...

Lions’ Titus Young banned from practice?

It was originally reported that Lions’ 2nd year receiver Titus Young was absent from OTAs because he had been suspended from practice by the team, following a fight with safety Louis Delmas. This was according to noted beat writer Anwar Richardson. However, multiple reports have refuted that report, including the official website of the Detroit Lions. If Young has indeed been suspended...

Cliff Avril, Lions far apart in negotiations

The Lions slapped defensive end Cliff Avril with the franchise tender earlier this offseason. However, he has yet to sign the 10.605 million dollar tender. He and the Lions are in negotiations, but reportedly are not close. Avril wants to make that franchise tender amount for 4-5 seasons, according to NFL.com’s Albert Breer, who says Avril is shooting for 42 million over 4 years...

Detroit Lions Dirty? Perception is Reality

For a decade, the Detroit Lions were the laughing stock of the NFL. Before that they were merely irrelevant. When discussing your glory days means reliving the fifties, people don't get too worked up about your team. When Martin Mayhew took over as general manager and hired Jim Schwartz as head coach, they decided they wanted to change the culture around the Detroit Lions. They...

Is Titus Young’s ‘suckerpunch’ suspension worthy?

Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young’s “suckerpunching” of teammate Louis Delmas is most definitely suspension-worthy. Young, entering his second season with the Lions, had a disagreement Monday during an optional team practice with Delmas, deciding to blindside him with a fist rather than settling the matter in more amicable, mature terms. Lions coach Jim Schwartz needs to [...]

Lions OT Jason Fox is a fan-friendly guy, but terrible at H-O-R-S-E

Jason Fox got incredibly lucky Wednesday. It was the type of luck that’s almost unheard of, honestly. The Detroit Lions offensive tackle may be a great football player, but he narrowly — and I mean narrowly — escaped defeat in a game of H-O-R-S-E prior to a Lions charity basketball game at Flint Southwestern Academy [...]

Let them eat tape: Silencing No. 9 doubters

Last year, it was Calvin Johnson. Early in 2012, Lions' QB Matthew Stafford -- even after gaudy statistics and a playoff berth -- is now being criticized with less-than-convincing evidence by at least one NFL analyst.
