Mike Pereira: "The Right Call Was Definitely Made On The Field"

With just over two minutes left in a stalemate, Ahmad Bradshaw appeared to fumble the ball. This play could have given the 49ers a chance to lock up the game with time winding down. Instead, the officials declared forward progress, an un-reviewable call, and the Giants kept the ball.

Shown several times on replay, one can clearly see Bradshaw is wrapped up by Tramaine Brock. More players swarmed in as Brock pulled Bradshaw backward. After all this had begun to occur, the side judge blew the whistle and waved his arms. Simultaneously, Navarro Bowman stripped Bradshaw and the 49ers recovered. Although this may seem like a difficult call, we must remember about something called reaction time. The official blew the whistle AFTER he decided forward progress had been lost. In that fraction of a second when his body began to blow the whistle, Bowman stripped the ball. The fact of the matter is, the call was correct.

Former NFL Director of Officials, Mike Pereira, made this comment about the call:

"The only time you can challenge a ruling of forward progress is if it involves a first down or a score. A forward progress ruling prior to a fumble is not reviewable, period. However, let’s assume for a moment that it was. It wouldn’t have been reversed to a fumble on this play because Brock was pulling Bradshaw backward before Bowman pulled the ball out of his hands. So the right call was definitely made on the field."

The man that was once in charge of every single official in the NFL sums up the call quite smoothly. Bradshaw was down according to forward progress and the call was not reviewable. Even if the call were reviewable, everyone watching the replay without a bias will clearly see that Bradshaw had stopped moving and was being dragged backward before Bowman stripped the ball. Officials have been criticized constantly during this postseason, but the crew running the NFC Championship game did a great job. Whether is was Kyle Williams' knee grazing the ball or Bradshaw's fumble. The calls were correct.
