The San Francisco 49ers have all the necessary pieces to win a Super Bowl except for one and that’s a half way decent quarterback.  The 49ers play great defense, they run the ball, but to get past the Saints and the Packers in the playoffs the 49ers will need to throw the ball down the field to keep up with the higher powered offenses.

Current 49ers quarterback Alex Smith has lead the 49ers to a 9-2 record, but he has been nothing more than a game manager.  Come playoff time Smith will be the reason why the 49ers lose because of his inability to make throws down the field to keep up with the high powered offenses in the NFC.

Did the 49ers make a mistake by not bringing in Matt Hasselbeck this last off-season?  If the 49ers had signed Hasselbeck instead of resigning Smith the 49ers would have the ability to keep up with the Packers and the Saints in the playoffs.

Hasselbeck hasn’t put up great numbers in 2011 with the Titans, but if you plug him into the 49ers offense right now with Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Braylon Edwards and a great run game with Frank Gore I bet Hasselbeck would be putting up top 10 type numbers.

The 49ers have had a great season, but without a quarterback they will go nowhere.  I’m sure if they could go back in time they would have looked elsewhere for a quarterback instead of going with Smith.
