Pro Football Zone:
Rookie cornerback D.J. Hayden will be held out of the Raiders preseason opener this week after suffering a hamstring injury on Monday.
Raiders head coach Dennis Allen confirmed that they’re keeping Hayden out of this week’s game because of offseason abdominal surgery.
“We’ll see where he’s at when we come back to work Wednesday,” Allen said, via the AP. “It’s more of a relation to the surgery that he had this offseason as opposed to the heart condition.”
Hayden was rushed into surgery last November for a tear of the inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the lower half of the body to the heart, after a collision in practice. Doctors had to cut through Hayden’s sternum to save him. The injury is 95 percent fatal.
The 23-year-old had his offseason cut short when he underwent surgery in late May to remove scar tissue from his abdominal region.
Hayden has been wearing a red jersey in practice to let his teammate know he can’t be hit during drills.

Former backup running back Taiwan Jones is looking like an NFL cornerback so far at Oakland Raiders training camp in Napa. The hometown kid has become a favorite of the Raider Nation even though he has not seen the field nearly enough.
During the 2011 draft, Reggie McKenzie actually had Jones pegged as a cornerback not a running back when he was in the Green Bay Packers draft...
The Oakland Raiders have released their first depth chart for the upcoming season via the team’s official website, which can be seen here or in the picture above. Although training camp has just about a week and half since its opening, it is always a good opportunity to take a look at how the positional battles are developing, with eyes set […]

Raiders running back Darren McFadden essentially confirmed that Matt Flynn will be the team's starting quarterback entering the season.
Raiders CB D.J. Hayden is out for their preseason opener against the Dallas
Cowboys, according to Michael Wagaman of the Associated Press. Hayden had
noticeably pulled up with a tight hamstring during Monday’s practice, but head
coach Dennis Allen said that was not why Hayden was out for the opener.
According to Allen, the Raiders new cornerback will miss their game against...
According to San Francisco Chronicle, rookie quarterback Tyler Wilson is now fourth on the Raiders depth chart behind Matt Flynn, Terrelle Pryor and Matt McGloin.
At Sunday’s practice, Matt Flynn, Terrelle Pryor and then undrafted Matt McGloin took turns in the two-minute drill, driving the team downfield. Fourth-round pick Tyler Wilson watched and when the buzzer sounded, jogged...
The Oakland Raiders once had one of the best defenses in the league, but that hasn’t been the case for a while. This offseason, general manager Reggie McKenzie did his best to fix that problem by bringing in some veteran players who can help the Raiders new and improved secondary in more ways than one.
Last year the Raiders were ranked 23rd in interceptions as they only had 11...
Reviews for Raiders rookie cornerback DJ Hayden from training camp have been generally positive, kinda like that new movie with a roided up Matt Damon about Occupy Wall Street in space or something. That’s good considering he was virtually absent for all of the team’s offseason activities after undergoing abdominal surgery related to his near-death injury last fall.
We all will...
Menelik Watson has been missing for all of Raiders training camp with what was an undisclosed injury but later revealed as a calf injury. It’s been a big setback for the rookie right tackle because each day he’s been absent, he’s losing valuable opportunities to learn in his first training camp as well as losing ground to Khalif Barnes on the depth chart.
But good news came...
Second-round draft pick Menelik Watson's first practice of training camp lasted less than 30 minutes Thursday before the Oakland Raiders' offensive lineman left the field after re-injuring a calf muscle in his left leg.
Watson, the 42nd overall pick and projected backup to right tackle Khalif Barnes, had been on the non-football injury list since the beginning of camp after...
QB Matt Flynn (Oakland)
Flynn probably won’t impress as a starter. He has just 141 career attempts in 5 seasons, though his numbers look good, completing 61.7% of his passes for an average of 7.7 YPA, 9 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. Green Bay’s supporting cast undoubtedly helped him put up those numbers and it’s too small of a sample size to say that the league was really...
When it comes to big-risk running backs, there are none bigger than Raiders' Darren McFadden and Cowboys' DeMarco Murray. McFadden's current average draft position is recorded as No. 29, 32, and 30. Murray is given the slight edge at No. 27, 31, and 25. If you're looking at either of these big-bodied backs it's probably to fill the role of RB2 or Flex.
Last off-season, I had the Raiders as one of the worst teams in the NFL going into 2012, as so many years of poor roster management by Al Davis and the previous regime left new GM Reggie McKenzie pretty powerless in his first off-season with the team, in terms of cap flexibility and draft picks. Hue Jackson’s trade for Carson Palmer left them without a 1st round pick...
