Just 24 hours after Chuck Pagano made an inspiring appearance at Lucas Oil Stadium, watching his team knock off the Dolphins in historic fashion, the Colts coach has received very promising news.
Doctors said Monday that Pagano's cancer is in remission, the Indianapolis Star reports. The 58-year-old passed the standard test issued to leukemia patients with "flying colors," as he begins his second round of chemotherapy.
Pagano's oncologist, Larry Cripe, declared there is no sign of the disease, but warned Pagano is not out of the woods yet. He'll need to undergo a two-year "maintenance treatment" after his final chemo session.
“We need to keep going and we will not be able to use the word ‘cure’ for four or five years,” Cripe said.
Statistics, though, are encouraging. Thanks to new medicine, 80 to 90 percent of those diagnosed with this particular type of leukemia are cured. The odds are certainly on Pagano's side.
